According to church legend, the first church was built on this site in the 1st century by St. Torquato. If so, then the first Christian community in Spain arose in this place. It is known that in the 10th century the Visigoth church was built here. After the military capture of the city, the Visigoth church was adapted for a mosque .

The city was conquered by the Spaniards in 1489 and the former mosque was adapted for the Christian church for the installation of the bull of Pope Innocent VIII [2] . They planned to create a new cathedral, but ancient projects were rejected. Later, construction began under Cardinal Avalos. The new project was created by architect Diego Siloe [2] and construction began in 1549 [2] . Part of the sacristy, the chapel of Don Thaddeus, absid and part of the nave belonged to the works of Diego Siloe. Chapel of Don Thaddeus preserves the features of Renaissance architecture.

In 1574, construction was stopped for lack of funds. The construction was delayed and the construction of the temple attracted among other architects - Francisco Roldana and Francisco Antero [3] . The bell tower was erected by the brothers Pedro and Miguel Freile [3] and subsequently became a symbol of the city. Construction was resumed 20 years later in 1594 with the assistance of Bishop Juan de Fonseca .

The cathedral was unfinished until the end of the XVII century . Construction was resumed counting on the help of the king of Spain. The bishop was sent a new project by architect Antonio Delgado [3] . The architect stopped working in the city because he was sent in 1714 to the city of Jaen . Construction management was transferred to Vicente Esero [3] , who began to change the Delgado project. The leadership of Cayon de la Vega, who built a vault and a dome, was significant. Cayon de la Vega was transferred in 1731 to the city of Cadiz , but the main facade was completed according to his Baroque design. The facade of the cathedral was built by architects Vicente Acero and Thomas Rachot , adding new details not provided for by the Cayon de la Vega project.
