Biography

She was born on May 1, 1924 (according to other sources in 1925) in Kasumkent, now Suleyman-Stalsky district of Dagestan . After graduating from high school, she entered the philological faculty of the Daggospedinstitut them. S. Stalsky (now DSU), where she was a Stalin scholarship holder. After graduation, she is sent to study at the graduate school of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Moscow) [1] .

In 1952, she became the first woman to defend a dissertation for the degree of candidate of philological sciences at the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1965, at a special council at the Institute of Linguistics of the Georgian SSR, she defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic - “Lezgi dialectology” [2] .

Since 1947, she worked at the Institute of Language, Literature and Art of the DSC RAS. From 1969 to 1990 - head. Institute for Non-Written Languages. In 1950-60 years - head. Department of Dagestan Languages ​​DGPI them. S. Stalsky [2] .

She raised two sons, one of whom is Enver Sheikhov professor, doctor of philological sciences, employee of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences [1] .

Scientific activity

Meylanova specialized in the field of grammar, dialectology, lexicology of the Dagestan literary and non-written languages. Organized research expeditions, actively participated in scientific conferences, including international ones [2] .

Meylanova conducted work on the study of non-written Lezgi languages ​​in the territory of Dagestan and Azerbaijan. The “Budukh-Russian Dictionary” published by her actually intensified research and publication of dictionaries of the Bagvali, Bezhtinsky, Ginukh, Godoberinsky, Gunzib, Karatinsky, Tindinsky, Khinalugsky, Chamalinsky languages. Under her leadership and participation, a comparative historical monograph on Dagestan languages ​​was prepared and published [2] .

Meilanova is the author of more than 200 articles published in scientific journals. She supervised the work on creating the first academic grammar of the Lezgi language, compiling a complete spelling dictionary [2] .

Meilanova was the head and member of the Committee of Linguistic Atlas of Europe, the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Woman of Dagestan” [3] , a member of the Committee of Soviet Women [2] . She was elected a member of a number of scientific councils at the Department of Literature and Language of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , a member of specialized councils for the defense of doctoral dissertations at Kiev University.
