The Department of Sambra-i-Maas ( French Département de Sambre-et-Meuse ) is the administrative unit of the First French Empire , located on the lands of the modern Belgian province of Namur and part of Luxembourg . The department is named for the Sambra and Maas rivers.

The department was created on October 1, 1795, after the Austrian Netherlands was occupied by French troops. It included the main part of the territory of the county of Namur , as well as parts of the territories of the Principality-Bishopric of Liege , the Duchy of Brabant and the Duchy of Luxembourg .
After the defeat of Napoleon, these lands became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands .
