Benoit, Nadezhda Leontyevna

Nadezhda Leontyevna Benois (married Ustinova ; 1896 - 1975 ) - British artist from the Benois family . Known in particular as a theater artist, stage designer and book illustrator. Mother of actor Peter Ustinov .

Biography

Born May 17, 1896 in St. Petersburg. Father - Leonty N. Benois , mother - Maria Alexandrovna (nee Sapozhnikova, 1859-1938).

She received her primary education at the Schaffe gymnasium in St. Petersburg , which she graduated in 1913. Since 1914, she studied at the New Art Studio with A. E. Yakovlev and V. I. Shukhaev , in 1918-1920 - at the picturesque department in the State Free Art Studios with Shukhaev, as well as D. N. Kardovsky and B. P. Popova .

In 1920, she married the English journalist (1892-1962), with whom she left for England the same year (settled in London ).

She died on February 8, 1975 in the town of Istlic, Gloucestershire.

Works

Nadezhda Benoit painted the impressionist landscapes of Great Britain, France and Italy. In April 1924, her first exhibition was held in the London gallery Little Art Rooms . Since 1929, she held solo exhibitions in the A. Tooth Gallery, exhibited at the New English Art Club (of which she was a member since 1937), and participated in other exhibitions in London galleries. In 1931 she participated in the exhibition of paintings of the Russian group in the gallery of Prince Vladimir Golitsyn. In 1953, the artist was awarded a solo exhibition in the Matthiesen Gallery. In 1975, she exhibited at the Parkin Gallery, and in 1976 at the Victoria and Albert Museum .

Benoit's works were acquired by the Manchester Art Gallery and Tate Gallery, and are also located at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh , the National Gallery of New Zealand and the Benoit Family Museum in Peterhof .
