Biography
Henry was the eldest of 6 or 7 sons of William de Percy , the 6th feudal baron Percy of Topcliffe, from marriage with Ellen de Ballyol, who was descended from the Anglo-Scottish family of Ballyles . In 1245, his father died, after which Henry inherited extensive possessions in Yorkshire , Lincolnshire and Hampshire . At that moment he was a minor. At the beginning of 1249, he offered £ 900 to manage his lands and permission to marry [1] .
Henry was knighted until June 1257, when he was in the army of King Henry III in Wales . In 1259, Henry is shown among the supporters of the Earl of Gloucester in agreement with Prince Edward , indicating the fact that Henry initially supported the baronial reform movement . But later Percy was among the supporters of the king. In 1263 he was among the barons who testified a document in which King Louis IX of France supported the English king as part of the settlement of the dispute between Henry III and the rebel barons [1] .
During the Northampton in April 1264, Percy was in the royal army, then he accompanied the king to Rochester Castle . May 14, Percy was in the royal army, which was defeated by the army of Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Lewis . As a result, Percy was captured, in which he was before the death of Montfort in the battle of Evesham , held on August 4, 1265 [1] .
Henry died on August 29, 1272. He was married to Eleanor de Varennes, John de Varennes , 6th Earl of Surrey, a close relative of King Henry III [K 1] . According to later genealogies, three sons were born from this marriage — William, John, and Henry ; however, documentary evidence of the existence of only John and Henry has now been found. As a result, Henry was succeeded by his youngest son of the same name, who was born after the death of his father - around March 25, 1273 [1] .
Henry's body was buried in Salt Abbey in Yorkshire. Later, his wife was buried next to him [1] .
