Story
Action 1. The English town of Newlingham near London, shortly after the end of the First World War . The wealthy Conway family celebrates the maturity of Kay's daughter, who gathers all the children of the recently widowed Mrs. Conway. The war is over, everyone is full of bright hopes - Madge is going to fight for social justice and hopes to attract a friend of the Gerald family to this, Kay is going to become a famous writer, the youngest Carol dreams of becoming an actress, and beautiful Hazel is promised a successful marriage to everyone. The favorite of the mother and the hero of the war, Robin is going to do business, and even from the mattress Allen is expected that he will make a career in the civilian field. Gerald leads a novice entrepreneur Ernest Beavers into the house, who awkwardly wrinkles his hat ...
Action 2. 18 years pass. Members of the Conway family reunite in the house - except for Carol, who has already died. The reality turned out to be harsher than it seemed many years ago. Kay is forced to do journalism; Madge remained an old maid, and the top of her dreams was the post of head of the gymnasium; Alain remained a small municipal employee, still living with his mother; Hazel was forced to marry Bevers, whom in her youth she did not even want to pay attention. And Robin safely blew up the money that Mrs. Conway infinitely believed in her son gave him, and as a result, now we need to urgently solve unpleasant financial issues. Beavers can help, but he bluntly refuses to do it, and Mrs. Conway slaps him in the face, after which Ernest leaves home. His wife follows him ... Having decided nothing plainly, the family members disperse, only Alain and Kay remain, who, in conversation with her brother, remarks: "There is an evil spirit in the world that we call Time."
Action 3. The immediate continuation of the first action. Kay feels that something terrible and irreparable will happen in the future. Mrs. Conway laughs at her melancholy state. The family is going to drink tea. Robin and Joan make it clear to others that there is a connection between them. Mrs. Conway expresses bright hopes that their family will always be happy, the children will visit the mother, and her house will flourish. Carol notices that the most important thing is life. she does not need money, nor husbands, nor travel. Kay promises to write only what he feels. Hazel dreams of inviting the whole family to his grand receptions at the London House, as he will travel with a handsome tall husband around the world. Robin enthusiastically imagines how he will become famous and gain recognition. Madge alone does not go to the table. At the end of the tea party, Kay again finds "insight." She begins to quote lines from a poem about the happiness that Alan will tell her in the future. No one understands her. Family members diverge. To the sound of music, Alan promises Kay someday to definitely answer her all her questions ...
