The Order was established by Pedro I , Emperor of the Brazilian Empire , by a brief decree of April 16, 1826, and confirmed by a detailed decree of Emperor Pedro II on October 19, 1842.
The appearance of the order echoed the Order of the Iron Crown .
The badge of the order was an image of a dragon ( supporter on the coat of arms of the house of Bragança , to which the emperors of Brazil belonged), with the emperor's monogram in the coat of arms on the chest, surrounded by a laurel wreath with a ribbon with the inscription "The Founder of the Brazilian Empire". The dragon rests on the crown, and is crowned with a second crown.
The star of the Order is five-pointed, with rays, covered with white enamel , with golden balls at the ends, and a dragon in the central medallion.
The ribbon is green; on the sides, indented from the edges, one white stripe.
According to the statute of 1842, the order had three classes: the Grand Cross, the Commander and the Chevalier.
The Order was abolished in 1890, shortly after the replacement of the monarchy in Brazil by the republic .
Order is considered rare. It is authentically known five orders awarded by the Great Cross:
- Franz II (I), Emperor of Austria (1827 - awarded even before the division of the order into classes);
- Louis of Orleans, Duke of Nemours (1864);
- Francis II (King of the Two Sicilies) (1866);
- Marshal of Brazil Luis Alves de Lima and Silva, Marquis de Caxias (1868);
- Alexander III , Emperor of Russia (27 (15 old style) September 1868).
Today, claimants to the throne from the Brazilian Imperial House order is awarded as a dynastic award.
