Inherited the title of Shirvanshahs after the death of his father Muhammad III ibn Yazid in 956. He ordered the execution of the vizier Ibn al-Maraghi. Ahmad I’s brother, Khaysam ibn Muhammad fled to the Lezgins, and cousin Abul-l-Khaysam ibn Ahmad fled to Barda , where he soon died and was buried in Kurdivan.
In 968, the brother of Ahmad I, Khaysam ibn Muhammad, together with Sallar Ibrahim ibn Marzuban ad-Delemi, made a trip to Shirvan and plundered this territory, including the city of Derbend . Shirvanshah Ahmad I paid off the salar by paying money, and he left the Shirvanshahs, and Khaysam fled to al-Muscat to the emir of Derbend, Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik al-Hashimi. The emir of Derbend demanded that part of the territory of the Shirvanshahs be given to Khaysam, but Ahmad I refused. In response, the emir of Derbend, Ahmad, having gathered an army of Sariris, made a campaign against Shirvan and took the fortress of Shabaran with an attack. Having plundered Shabaran, the Saririans left Shirvan and returned to Derbend .
Ahmad I ruled the country for about 25 years and died in June 981 .
