Biography
Lawrence Johnson was born June 26, 1925 in the suburbs of Sydney Cheltenham in the family of Algernon Sidney Johnson and Emily Margaret Manson-Johnson. He received primary education in Sydney and Parramatta . Since 1941, he studied botany at the University of Sydney. In 1948 he graduated from it, defending a dissertation, which was a reworking of the systematics of the Casuarine family.
Since 1948, Johnson worked in the herbarium of the Sydney Botanical Garden. He was engaged in the processing of herbarium specimens of the Sagovnikovye family for the corresponding Flora of New South Wales section. Then Lawrence Johnson studied the taxonomy of the Eucalyptus genus, proposed to divide it into 12 smaller genera.
In 1962-1963, Johnson worked at Kew Herbarium in London. Since 1972, Lawrence has been the director of the Sydney Botanical Garden . In 1979, he received state support for the creation of a complete monograph of the flora of Australia. Under his leadership, several new buildings and laboratories were built in the garden. In 1981, Johnson participated in the organization of the XIII International Botanical Congress .
In 1985, Lawrence Johnson resigned as director of the Botanical Garden, continuing to work as an honorary research fellow and being appointed honorary director. A few years later he was deprived of his last status due to disagreements with the administration of the botanical garden, but in 1997 he was restored to that status.
In 1997, Johnson was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died on August 1, 1997 .
