History
Located in the Ruhr region (German: Ruhrgebiet ), the Knappschaft clinic was originally created to provide medical services to local miners. Planning for the construction of the hospital dates back to the time of World War I, when in 1913 the Union of Miners decided to begin construction of ten hospitals with a total capacity of 300 people, one of which was to be located in Dortmund. But the First World War , as, subsequently, and the Second prevented the implementation of the project. And only in 1949, when the Insurance Fund of the Union of Miners ( German Knappschaft Krankenkasse [1] ) started the capital construction of a hospital in the Dortmund – Brakel part, the idea was renewed. At the beginning of 1955 the first building was ready, and already on July 11, 1958 the clinic was opened.
On April 1, 2010, the Knappschaft Clinic Dortmund merged with the Clinic at the Park in Lünen-Brambauer into the Clinic Westfalen [2] . On January 1, 2013, the Helmig Clinic ( German Hellmig-Krankenhaus Kamen ) in the city of Kamen joined the union.
