Summary
The Botanical Garden was founded in 1929 in the park of Zrudliska Polish. . After the end of the Second World War in the territory adjacent to the Health Park Polish. (formerly Pilsudski Park), the creation of a new botanical garden began. In 1988, the park was named after the Polish botanist Jakub Movshovich Polish. .
The garden is located in the western part of the city on the street. Krzemenetsk 36/38 ( Polish ul. Krzemieniecka ) and is open daily from April 1 to October 31.
The total area of the garden is 67 hectares (including a botanical garden with an area of 2 hectares and a palm greenhouse in the park of Zrudliska).
History
The project of the botanical garden and palm tree greenhouse was included in the plan of the National Health Park Polish. which was developed in the 30s of the XX century by Stefan Rogovich. On September 19, 1946, on the initiative of professors Jan Mushinsky and Yakub Movshovich, they allocated 1.3 hectares of land for a plot of medicinal plants , which became the core of the future botanical garden.
In 1947, a competition for the best project of the Botanical Garden in Lodz with an area of 75 hectares was held. The first prize was given to the Flora project by Vladislav Nemirski and Alfonso Zelonko from the Warsaw Agricultural University, Polish. . But the project was not implemented.
Only in 1967 the construction of the botanical garden in its current form began. The garden area was leveled and divided into plots of 1 ha, ponds were dug, an alpine garden was laid out and greenhouses were built.

July 19, 1973 was opened to visitors the first part of the garden with an area of about 20 hectares. The following departments were represented: Polish flora, alpine garden , systematics of herbaceous plants and a fragment of the park plantings department. In subsequent years, gradually opened new departments of the park. The territory of the garden was fenced from the very beginning, but the entrance to the park was free. Paid tickets were introduced in the second half of the 80s due to numerous damages and thefts.
At the moment, the Botanical Garden is a budget unit of the city of Lodz and reports directly to the Department of Environment and Agriculture.
Plant departments and collections
The botanical garden contains more than 3,500 plant taxa , which are represented in nine thematic sections:
- Japanese Garden (2 hectares) - located near two small ponds in the north-east garden. Here are plants from Japan , China and other countries of the Far East .
- The department of systematic herbaceous plants (1.5 hectares) is located in the northeastern part of the garden.
- The Alpine garden is a mountainous terrain, formed from stone blocks with winding paths. In particular, pines , yews , Carpathian bells , phloxes , rhododendrons , stemless barb , quince , holly , larch , juniper , pseudo-tosuga , Serbian spruce, Eastern spruce , Cedar European pine grow .
- The Department of Plant Biology and Morphology (7 ha) is located in the eastern part of the garden. About 280 species and varieties of trees and shrubs and more than 440 taxa of grassy plants grow here,
- Collection of ornamental plants (2.1 ha) - located in the south-western part of the garden. An impressive collection of roses, rhododendrons and conifers and shrubs.
- Department of park landscaping (9 hectares) - located in the central part of the garden.
- Department of Polish Flora (9.2 hectares) - located in the north-western part of the garden.
- The Department of Medicinal Plants is the oldest department, where often imperceptible plants are presented, from which syrups, extracts, essences, tinctures and infusions are made, such as St. John's wort , horsetail , two year old , flax , strawberries , red basil , large serpentine , bitter wormwood , cumin and kupena .
- Arboretum - the largest department area of 18.7 hectares, occupies the southern part of the garden.
