Biography
Born in a family of Moscow doctors: father - academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR , director of the Institute of Tuberculosis Nikolai Andreyevich Shmelev , mother - Nadezhda Savvishna, nee Dragunova. After graduating from school as an external student , he entered MGIMO , from where, after the third year, he transferred to the philological faculty of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov (graduated in 1951 ). Pupil of V.V. Vinogradov . Candidate of Philological Sciences (1955, dissertation "The Meaning and Use of the Form of the Imperative mood in the Modern Russian Literary Language") [1] . He taught in high school and in a number of pedagogical universities; since 1967 - at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. V.I. Lenin .
In 1955 - 1958 he worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , from 1958 - at the Institute of Russian Language ; He headed the sector, later the department of modern Russian language. Doctoral dissertation "Problems of the semantic analysis of vocabulary " (1969) [2] . Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Literature and Language (Linguistics) since December 26, 1984 , full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences since December 23, 1987. Chairman of the Spelling Commission of the Academy of Sciences (1989-1993) [3] .
The wife, T.V. Bulygin , and the son, A.D. Shmelev , are also well-known linguists.
He was buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery [4] .
Contribution to Science
The research of D. N. Shmelev played an important role in the development of theoretical semantics and Russian lexicology. His most famous monograph is “Problems of semantic analysis of vocabulary” ( 1973 ), written on the basis of a doctoral dissertation; a number of its provisions were subsequently developed within the framework of the Moscow semantic school . The author of a popular university textbook on the lexicology of the modern Russian language . He also dealt with the problems of the historical evolution of grammar , Russian historical lexicology, Russian syntax , especially a lot - the study of the general problems of stylistics, language and style of fiction. D. N. Shmelev was himself no stranger to literary creation; his poetic and prosaic experiments were published posthumously as part of his selected works.
