The Royal Shakespeare Troupe ( English Royal Shakespeare Company , RSC ) is a large British theater troupe based in Stratford-upon-Avon , Warwickshire , England . RSC annually produces about 20 theater productions, which are regularly shown in London , New Castle and other cities in the UK and around the world.
The troupe was established by royal decree on March 20, 1961. Its foundation was the troupe of the Shakespeare Memorial Theater, which was renamed the Royal Shakespeare Theater . The company was headed by Peter Hall . During its existence, RSC acquired several new theaters and received additional venues for its disposal, including the Aldwich Theater in London.
The traditional repertoire of the troupe consists of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. In addition, RSC produces other productions, including contemporary authors, and also establishes creative ties with leading theater workers from other countries and educational institutions, contributing to the popularization of Shakespeare's work.
