Biography
She graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Chechen-Ingush State University named after L. N. Tolstoy . She worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature in the gymnasium of the village of Ali-Yurt . In 1998, at the age of 30, she made her first ascent to Elbrus as part of a group of climbers from Karachay-Cherkessia [2] and since then she has seriously taken up mountain climbing.
In 2012, she became a member of the project “Ingushetia at Altitude”, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Ingushetia, whose goal was to conquer Everest. Along with Leyla Albogachieva, Sergey Bogomolov , Honored Master of Sports of the USSR , conqueror of 13 highest peaks of the world, Vladimir Korenkov, a candidate for master of sports in mountaineering, twice climbing Mount Everest, Aznor Hadzhiev, 44 times climbing Elbrus, Musa Hadz took part in climbing Everest Yusup Evkurov, who climbed Kazbek and Elbrus, Magomed Aushev, Visan Yusupov, who climbed Kazbek on the most difficult rock-ice route in August 2011.
In 2013, Leyla Albogachieva again climbed Everest, now alone, thus becoming the only Russian woman to conquer this peak twice [3] .
During her mountaineering career, Albogachieva also climbed the South American peak of Aconcagua and the African mountain Kilimanjaro , and climbed Mount Elbrus 12 times.
The circumstances of the death
The thirteenth ascent to Elbrus in September 2014 became fatal for the legendary athlete. Leyla Albogachieva intended to set an absolute world record - to complete a two-sided full cross, never before carried out by mountain athletes. Her plans included to climb from the side of Kabardino-Balkaria to the western peak of Elbrus, to descend between the two caps, and then to rise to the eastern peak and descend already from the direction of Karachay-Cherkessia. After that, the climber had to go all the way in the opposite direction [4] .
During the ascent, Leyla Albogachieva recorded a special video message to the leaders of all countries of the world with an appeal to stop the war and stop the bloodshed on Earth: “In Ukraine, old people, women, children are dying. Thousands of children were left orphans. Military events in Syria, Israel, Iran ... War should become a prohibited activity. They are praying for this and peaceful people of the whole earth are striving for this. ” [5] The record made by the athlete was subsequently found among her belongings.
Communication with the Albogachieva was interrupted on September 17, but the climber’s search began only on September 21, when she did not arrive at the collection point in the village of Terskol . 124 people were involved in the search operation (including rescuers from all regions of the North Caucasus Federal District , as well as from Nizhny Novgorod ). The athlete’s searches were carried out using 28 pieces of equipment, one private helicopter and were held in extreme mode, repeatedly interrupted due to the most difficult weather conditions. A day after the start of the search and rescue operation on Elbrus, climbing equipment and personal belongings of the athlete were found. Leyla Albogachieva herself was found only on October 3, the last day of the search and rescue operation. Already after the official announcement of the completion of the search, rescuers descending to the plain found her body in a crevice at a depth of 150 meters. This happened 200 meters from the place where her belongings were previously discovered. The body of Leyla Albogachieva was lowered from a height of 5200 meters and handed over to relatives.
The head of the Republic of Ingushetia, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov , who was on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia during this period, sent a message of condolences to the relatives and friends of Leyla Albogachieva: “The death of Leyla was a big blow not only to her relatives and friends, but also to all residents of Ingushetia, for those who knew her, who conquered impregnable mountain peaks with her. She was a strong, strong-willed person. Purposeful and patriotic, ready to make the impossible possible, it was a national treasure of Ingushetia and the pride of Russia ” [6] .
October 5, 2014 in the Republic of Ingushetia, mourning for the dead climber was declared [7] .
Leyla Sultanovna Albogachieva was buried in the family cemetery in the native village of Ali-Yurt. The issue of perpetuating the name of the legendary climber in her homeland, in the Republic of Ingushetia, as well as in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, where she died [8], is being decided .
