Sports career
Dominic Monami has been playing tennis since he was nine years old [2] . In the second half of 1990 , at the age of 17, she won five consecutive champion titles in ITF ten-thousandth tournaments in Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, and in June of the following year she became a professional, soon after making her debut as a member of the Belgian national team in the Federation Cup . In early 1992, Monami , who took 134th place in the WTA ranking, reached the fourth round at the Australian Open after defeating the 17th racket of the world, Helena Sukova, and for the first time entered the hundred of the strongest tennis players on the planet. In 1993, in Kitzbühel (Austria), she won her first title in the WTA tournaments , beating paired with Chinese Li Fan , and towards the end of the year in Montpellier reached her first single final at this level. In Montpellier, Monami and Janetta Gusarova representing Slovakia also reached the finals and doubles, defeating the first and third seeded couples along the way. As a result, Monami finished the year in 59th place in the ranking both in singles and doubles.
Dominic achieved further career success in the second half of the 90s under the name of her husband - van Rost. In 1996, in Cardiff, she won her first WTA singles event, and over the next year added two more singles and one doubles to her title collection. In 1997, Van Rost showed his best singles results at Grand Slam tournaments , making it to the quarter finals at the Australian Open. In the third round of the tournament, van Rost, ranked 43rd, defeated the third racket of the world Arancu Sanchez , and then the twentieth racket of the world, Chandu Rubin . Until the end of the year, she also defeated the seventh racket of the world, Irina Spirlyu, and she herself finished the season among the 20 strongest tennis players in the world.
In 1998, Van Rost continued to develop his singles success. For the first half of the season, she played in the five finals of the WTA tournaments, although she won only one - in early January in Auckland (New Zealand). During these months, she won two victories over Iva Mayoli , who was in the top ten, and in October Van Rost defeated the fifth racket of the world Venus Williams and the top-ranking Martin Hingis at the second category tournament in Fildershadt (Germany), then stumbled into the semifinal match with the 18th racket of the world Sandrine Testu . After Filderstadt, van Rost rose in ninth place in the ranking, becoming the first ever Belgian tennis player in the top ten tennis players in the world [6] . At the end of the year, Van Rost participated in the final WTA tournament with the participation of the best tennis players in the world and reached the quarter finals after defeating the seventh racket of the tournament Conchita Martinez . At the end of the season, she was recognized in Belgium as the " athlete of the year " [7] .
In 1999 and 2000, Dominic van Rost was another four times played in the finals of the WTA singles. In 1999, for the second time in her career, she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, and at the end of the year she played for the second year in a row in the final tournament of the season, where she again reached the quarter-finals. In 2000, Van Rost defeated the second racket of the world, Lindsay Davenport , on her way to the finals of the tournament at Eastbourne . This year, however, her successes in doubles were even more significant than in singles. Van Rost began 2000 with reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, paired with compatriot Els Cullens , in August she won the 2nd category tournament in Los Angeles with her, and then made her way to the semifinals of the US Open after defeating the sixth and ninth seeded pairs ( Natalie de Tauzia - Alexander Fusano and Conchita Martines- Patricia Tarabini . at the Olympic Games in Sydney van growth reached the quarterfinals in singles and paired with Kallens took another step forward, losing in the semifinals of the future world champions Venus and Serena Williams in. atche for "bronze" Belgian pair beat opponents from Belarus, which according to most van Growth was the highest achievement in her playing career is more important than getting into the top ten singles [2] . October 19, 2000 Van Growth announced the end performances, making an exception only to participate in the final tournament of the season paired with Cullens and the final ball of the World Group of the Federation Cup. [6] In the final WTA tournament, van Rost and Cullens beat the seeded first Ai Sugiyama and Julie Alar-Decuji , losing to Nicole in the semifinals Are BAT - Manon Bollegraf . In the Federation Cup, Van Rost won with Cullens her pair match against rivals from the US team , but this victory did not solve anything, as the Americans won the semifinal match ahead of schedule. This victory was the 22nd during the appearances of van Rost for the Belgian national team (17 singles and 5 doubles wins) out of 33 meetings. On an individual level, Dominic van Rost has won nearly 300 singles and more than 120 doubles in WTA and Grand Slam tournaments. Her favorite courts were hard ones , and the backhand (hit with a closed racket) was the strongest weapon [2] .
