Content
Story
2044th year. After a natural catastrophe, the world's population was reduced to 21 million people. Most of the land is now occupied by radioactive desert, and the survivors are hiding in the cities behind high walls and artificial clouds, which were created with the help of robots - Pilgrims. ROC manufactures robots that support the existence of the remaining cities. Consciousness of robots is limited to two protocols that prohibit harm to humans, as well as modify themselves or other robots. Once a policeman was pumped up with alcohol and drugs, he destroys the robot due to the fact that it seemed to him that the mechanism was repairing itself. The case goes to the insurance department of the manufacturer of robots. Insurer Jacques Vaucan finds that destroyed by a policeman and some other robots are indeed very skillfully modified by someone. He begins to look for this man, whom he calls the Watchmaker. But gradually he becomes convinced that the robots modified by the Watchmaker are not limited to the second protocol, and the Watchmaker itself is not a human being. In the depths of the radioactive desert, where he was brought to the search, Vokan is confronted with people who have lost humanity, as well as with robots, who have acquired not only self-consciousness, but also true humanism .
