Formation
Matthew Healy, the son of Denise Welch and Tim Healy, grew up in Newcastle and Manchester. He met Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann and George Daniel in Wilmslow, a high school near Manchester. Teenagers began to play music, in 2004 a group was formed. A local Council employee organized a series of concerts for the children. Healy discovered Hannah when he "came to us and said he wanted to play in one of these shows." The band started by playing a series of covers while they

as Healy later said. After that, Hann suggested that the participants form a group. Healy was originally a drummer, but he also became a vocalist after the previous vocalist moved to another group. George Daniel became the new drummer, and, from that moment, the group had a full line-up.
Music Style
Critics from Pitchfork Magazine favorably compared them to The Big Pink . Sex EP was described by Paste “in equal parts, both ethereal and electro-pop ”, with “intrusive” and “smooth” vocals. Their “soft”, “truncated” style was praised for the lack of “attention-grabbing production theatricality”. Although generally recognized as an alternative style, the band was influenced by various genres: electro-pop , electronic music , pop-rock and R&B . Healy says Talking Heads , Prince , My Bloody Valentine , Michael Jackson , Peter Gabriel , Brian Eno , Di Angelo and Sigur Rós had a greater influence on him. He also says that he was greatly influenced by the work of filmmaker John Hughes . The 1975 texts raise the themes of loneliness, love, growing up, indifference, drugs, hope, death, and fear.
Group Name
Previously, the band performed and released materials under various names: Talkhouse, The Slowdown, BIGSLEEP, and Drive Like I Do. In the end, the group settled on the title The 1975. Healy says that the name was inspired by the scribbles found on the back page in the old Beat Generation poetry book of June 1, 1975.
