Edition History
The magazine began to appear in 1879 under the personal guidance of Elena Petrovna Blavatsky in Bombay (modern Mumbai), and set as its goal the dissemination of Theosophical ideas among the widest possible audience. After the headquarters of the Theosophical Society, headed by the founders in 1882 from Bombay to Adyar , moved, the editorial committee followed the leadership of the society.
The magazine publishes articles on Eastern philosophy, on a wide range of religious beliefs and practices, on art , literature , music , medicine and (as the name implies) on occultism and Theosophy .
Subscription
The magazine does not contain advertisements, it is financed by subscription and, first of all, by the funds of the Theosophical Society “Adyar”, which in turn come as voluntary donations from around the world. The printed materials of the Adyar Theosophical Society are distributed exclusively through the Theosophical Publishing House. The magazine does not go on sale at newsstands or tobacco shops.
By subscription, Theosophist is delivered to several European countries. The letter of Vladimir Solovyov [1] dated November 2, 1882 has been preserved. The letter is addressed to A. N. Aksakov (1832-1893), and in it Solovyov, referring to the wanderer lifestyle and lack of funds, asks through an intermediary to exclude him from the number of subscribers [2] .
The network contains a list of all the titles of articles, notes and letters that the magazine published over 135 years of its existence, from 1879 to 2014. The content in English, topics (in addition to the obvious and cross-cutting - Theosophy) are the most diverse [3] .
