FireChat is an Internet-based instant messaging client for Android and iOS . To send text messages and images, wireless networks Bluetooth and WiFi are used , devices with installed FireChat can detect each other within a radius of 60 meters . The application appeared for major mobile platforms in March-April 2014.

Each device with FireChat actually becomes a relay for other devices with this program, organizing a distributed mesh network . Using the program, you can create your own networks in which each device has equal rights.
The developer of Open Garden positions the application as a means of communication in nature, a football match, the beach and in other places where a communication problem may arise.
FireChat was actively used during the protests in Hong Kong in 2014 [1] [2] .
In July 2015, the application added the function of sending private messages [3] .
