Johannes Hubertus (Jop) Martens ( Dutch Johannes Hubertus "Joop" Martens ; December 8, 1900 , Amsterdam - October 22, 1976 , ibid.) - Dutch footballer who played as a midfielder . Throughout his career he played for the Ajax Amsterdam, in which he once became the champion of the Netherlands .

Sports career

At the age of sixteen, Martens became a member of the Ajax Football Club. At that time he lived in the eastern part of Amsterdam at 15 Van Swindenstrat Street [2] . Yop began to play for the fourth composition of the club, where Jan de Boer and Wim van Ran also played [3] , and three years later he became the main team of Ajax.

He made his debut in the Netherlands on May 9, 1920 in a match with the club DFK [4] , which ended in a victory for the Amsterdamians with a score of 5: 2 [5] [6] . In that season, he was marked by only one appearance on the field [5] . Only two years later, the midfielder managed to gain a foothold in the first team [7] . In the 1922/23 season, Martens played in 11 championship meetings [7] , and already in the next season he thoroughly took the place of Henka Hordeika [8] . He won the country's title at the end of his career when, in the 1930/31 season , Ajax won the championship for the third time in its history [9] .

In total, over twelve years Martens took part in 157 matches of the championship of the Netherlands, scoring 3 goals in them [4] . The last time as part of the “red-white” he went on the field February 7, 1932 in a match with the club “Hermes” ICE [4] . In the next Ajax match, Jop served as a line referee, helping Judge van Bisselik [10] .

Martens later played for the club’s team of veterans along with Siegler , de Boyce , Scheetters , de Natris and other players [11] . In the late 1930s, he worked as a trainer in the club “ De Woleweikkers ” [12] [13] .

Personal life

Yop was born in December 1900 in Amsterdam. Father - Jan Martens, was from Vonceradel and worked in the field of precious stones [14] , mother - Trentje Johanna Bonteku, was born in Amsterdam. In addition to Yop, the family also had a daughter - Hillegonda Gertroyda Maria.

He worked as a bank employee. Jop married at the age of thirty-one - his chosen one was 28-year-old Maria Egenia Jansen, a native of Zwolle . Their marriage was registered on July 13, 1932 in Amsterdam [15] . They had four children: a son and three daughters.

Martens died on October 22, 1976 at the age of 75. He was cremated on October 27 at the Westgard Crematorium [16] .
