Biography
He was preparing for a spiritual career, but due to a duel he had to abandon it and engaged in commercial speculation in Constantinople . His attempt to free the captive emperor John V Paleolog was unsuccessful; nevertheless, in 1376 he was granted the island of Tenedos, which he occupied on behalf of Venice .
When the Chioggi War broke out between Hungary , Padua and Genoa , on the one hand, and Venice, on the other, Zeno was instructed by the Doge to defend the republic against the Hungarians. Zeno successfully cruised in the Eastern Mediterranean and saved Venice, which was besieged and heavily crowded by the Genoese.
In 1403, near Modon, Zeno defeated the French fleet, cruising, under the command of Marshal Busiko , off the coast of Morea.
In 1404, Zeno expelled Francis of Carrara from Padua, in whose palace a document was found showing that Francis had paid 400 ducats to Zeno. The Council of Ten took advantage of this document to strip Zeno of all posts and sentenced him to two years in prison in 1406 .
Upon leaving prison, Zeno went to Palestine ; in 1410 he defended Lusignan of Cyprus against the Genoese, then returned to Venice and devoted the last years of his life to literature.
