The variety was obtained by Frank Abbott in 1930, as a result of crossing an unknown variety from the Mollis Hybrids group with Rhododendron prinophyllum .
Varieties of 'Jane Abbott Peach' and 'Jane Abbott' have a similar origin.

Deciduous shrub. Crohn is rounded. Height is up to 182 cm.
The flowers are funnel-shaped, wide open, fragrant , pink [2] .
