Gnamptogenys alfaroi (lat.) Is a species of primitive tropical ants of the genus Gnamptogenys of the tribe Ectatommini of the subfamily Ectatomminae [1] [2] .

Distribution

They are found in the jungle of Central and South America ( Costa Rica , Nicaragua , Ecuador , Colombia ) [3] [4] .

Description

Body length about 5 mm. It differs from closely related species by a rectangular head, transverse grooves on the propodeum, smooth mandibles and a rounded (in lateral view) apex of the petiolus nodule; methanotic suture developed (included in the species group Gnamptogenys mordax species group). The body is black (legs and antennae are lighter). The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one nodular segment ( petiol ). The head and the whole body are covered with deep grooves. Antennae 12-segmented. The eyes are large convex. The jaws are sub-triangular with a flat basal edge [3] [4] .
