Biography
Gabriel Kondratenko was born on March 21, 1854 in the family of a serf peasant in the village of Pavlovskoye-Kurakino of the Gorodishchensky district of the Penza province .
In 1873-1882 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, first as a freeloader with K. F. Guna , then as a student in a landscape class with M. K. Klodt . During his studies, he was repeatedly awarded small (1875, 1877, 1879) and large (1877, 1880) silver medals. In 1882 he graduated from the Academy, having received a gold medal for “Moonlit Night in Bakhchisarai”. [2]
He lived in Petersburg. In the years 1880-1914 Gavriil Pavlovich Kondratenko traveled to the cities of Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, Crimea. He visited Italy and Greece (1890-1900, 1914). In the 1880s he performed a series of twenty landscapes and paintings related to Lermontian places in Moscow and the North Caucasus. In 1913, one of his paintings depicting the Koporsky fortress was posted in the eponymous article by the Sytin Military Encyclopedia [3] . In 1914-1915 he illustrated the collected works of M. Yu. Lermontov .
Kondratenko participated in exhibitions in the halls of the IAH (1883-1918, with breaks), the Society for the Promotion of Arts (1883-1886, with breaks), the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1887-1890), the All-Russian Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896), World Exhibition in Paris (1900), an exhibition of paintings by Petrograd artists of all directions (1923).
He was a member and exhibitor of the St. Petersburg Society of Artists (1891-1918), a foreman of the Committee for the Organization of Exhibitions (1893-1897), chairman of the Society (1897-1917); also - a member and exhibitor of the Society of Artists named after A.I. Kuindzhi (1917-1918, member since 1910).
Gavriil Pavlovich Kondratenko died in 1924.
Proceedings
The artist's works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum , as well as in the expositions of museums and art galleries of the country: Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts. M. A. Vrubel, Irkutsk Regional Art Museum. V.P. Sukachev, Penza Regional Art Gallery named after K. A. Savitsky, Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum and others.
