With older buildings, the Chapel of Saint-Chapelle and the former royal castle, later a prison, the Conciergerie forms an architectural complex that occupies more than a third of the island.
The modern building was built on the territory of the royal palace in 1857 - 1868 according to the project of architects Joseph-Louis Duke and Honore Doma (the project itself was proposed back in the 1840s , but was postponed due to the 1848 revolution ). The building is decorated with sculptures by Jean-Marie Bonnassier [2] . In October 1868, the grand opening of the palace was led by Baron Osman [3] .
To date, the French judicial institutions, including the Court of Cassation and the Court of Appeal, continue to operate in the Palace [4] . The main entrance is located on the eastern facade .
