Story
The novel takes place in Warsaw and the small (fictional) settlement of Iksinuwe. In the center of the plot are the boarding houses of noble maidens, in which they teach the daughters of noblemen and wealthy citizens. The main character is Magdalena Brzeska, who was brought up in one of these guest houses, in the guesthouse K. Latter, and then she herself became a teacher in him.
The main idea of the work is the changing role of women in society, the desire for independence, with some degree of feminism . In the role of a kind of leader and activist of such a movement, the elderly and experienced Mrs. Howard becomes a teacher for some time in the guesthouse K. Latter. Her allegations and personal position, however, did not affect her decision to marry in the end.
