Brother Giovanni Pindemonte . He traveled a lot in Europe; in France he witnessed revolutionary events ; enthusiastically welcomed the beginning of the movement, sang the opening of the General States in the poem La Francia, but then, under the influence of the Jacobin terror, he became disillusioned with the leaders of the revolution and cooled down to it. With sadness I saw the successes of the Napoleonic regime (the tragedy of "Arminius", 1804). He spent the last years of his life in solitude.
He wrote quite a lot, but not everything he wrote is relevant at the present time (contemporaries showered him with often exaggerated praises). A very valuable contribution to the literature is his translation of the Odyssey (completed in 1819). In his Poesie Campestre (1788) there are many felt, truly poetic pages; in his Sermoni (a collection of small satyrs) one can feel an undoubted talent, devoid of bile and sarcasm, noting and ridiculing human shortcomings and weaknesses in the spirit of Horace . In “A hammer blow on the bell tower of St. Mark in Venice "(" Il colpo di mariello del campanile di S. Marco in Venezia ", 1820) he is a moralist and preacher.
In the “Epistles” to various persons (Epistole, 1805), the poet’s thoughts and dreams are perfectly reflected. The remaining unfinished poem “I cimiteri” is imbued with a sad, elegiac mood. He also wrote dramas (“Ulisse”, “Arminio”), which rarely rose above mediocrity, and prose works - “Elogi” (a collection of biographies of prominent figures), “Prose campestre”. Love for Italy, the glorification of the poet’s independence and inspiration, artistic taste, daydreaming - all this in Pindemont’s poems sometimes makes you forget some lengths, outdated tricks, and a moralizing tone.
A collection of original Pindemont poems was published in Florence in 1858 with a foreword by A. Torri . A. Pushkin ’s poem “ From VI Pindemonte ” (“I do not appreciate high-profile rights dearly”) is not taken at all from the works of Pindemonte, the mention of his name is a literary hoax.
