The 3rd World Drafts-64 Championship was held in Brazil in 1989 in the Brazilian city of San Lawrence . The competition involved 14 athletes. World champion became the representative of the USSR Alexander Schwartzman . The second and third place was taken by representatives of the USSR Vladimir Vigman and Mikhail Rakhunov .

The championship was attended by 14 participants from four countries: 5 drafts players from the USSR, 7 from Brazil , 1 each from Israel and France .
Regulations and Outcomes
The tournament was held in a circular system of two rounds a day, except for the first game day. For a victory, 1 point was given, for a draw ½ point and 0 for a defeat.
After the first round, Vladimir Wigman, Lourival France and Douglas Diniz were leading by 1 point each. After the second, Wigman, Lourival France, Douglas Diniz, Rostislav Leschinsky and Alexander Shvartsman were in the lead - 1.5 points, after the third Vladimir Wigman, Lourival France and Douglas Diniz - 2.5 points each. They were the leaders after the fourth round - 3 points and after the fifth - 3.5 points. From the eighth round to the twelfth, the sole leader was Vladimir Wigman.
Three rounds before the end of the tournament, Wigman was ahead of Alexander Shwartzman, who was pursuing him, by a point. In these three rounds, Schwartzman scored three victories and caught up with Wigman. By position, with an equal number of points, the previous world champion had a preference and retained his title.
