 2014 European Championship Finish

The start of the race was given on August 16 at 9:00 local time. 53 runners from 17 countries went to the distance [2] . Competitions were held in cloudy and cool weather (13-14 degrees along the course).

The Italian Champion Anna Incherti started as the current European champion, who finished third in the previous championship but received the title after doping disqualifications of the first two runners, Lithuanian Zhivile Balchyunayte and Russian Naili Yulamanova . As part of the national team of Estonia , the twin sisters Luik: Leila , Liina and Lili took part in the competitions. The host of the championship was the Olympic champion of 2012 in the triathlon Nikola Spirig , who temporarily changed her specialization.

The main fight for the medals developed predictably: with the participation of pre-launch favorites, without unexpected breaks and lags. By the middle of the race, the three leaders were identified, which included Frenchwoman Kristel Done , Italian silver medalist at the 2013 world marathon, Valeria Straneo, and a number of run titles at the stadium Elvan Abeylegesse from Turkey . After a couple of kilometers, only the first two of them remained at the head of the race. The remaining 20 kilometers of the distance, Don and Straneo overcame mainly together, keeping the pursuers at a short distance from themselves. The French woman made a decisive breakthrough 3 kilometers before the finish line, which allowed her to break away from the only competitor and set a new record for the European Championships - 2: 25.14. 13 seconds after Don, Straneo finished, having won the second silver of a major tournament in a row. Jessica Augusta from Portugal climbed to the bronze position, in the second half of the distance she went around a little passing Abeylegess and constantly creating tension for the leaders with her close presence [3] .
