The fruit bodies are spherical, first sessile, then in the form of a spherical or onion-shaped head on a well-developed rigid stalk with a different nature of the surface. Exoperidium is brittle, quickly cracking and remaining in the form of a Volvo in the base of the pedicle or collar at the border of the head and pedicle. The endoperidium is thin, strong, at the apex with a rounded aperture.
Gleb of ripe mushrooms is powdery, of various colors. Four-spore basidia , sterigma located on the sides. Spores of spherical shape, smooth or variously ornamented. The capillary hyphae are low - branching, with thick walls, sometimes septate.
Most species are saprotrophs ; for some, the ability to form mycorrhiza is indicated.
A genus with a wide range, the greatest species diversity is observed in the arid regions of the world.
