Biography
He was born on March 22 (April 3 according to the old style) in 1883 in the city of Verny (Alma-Ata). His father, Grigory Vasilyevich Glushkov, came from a peasant family, an artist by education, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts, a teacher of drawing, drawing and calligraphy of Vernensky male and female gymnasiums. Mother, Susanna Vasilievna, was the daughter of a priest.
In 1901 he graduated from high school with a gold medal and entered the St. Petersburg Institute of Railway Engineers . After graduation, he was left at the department for improvement in the hydraulic engineering specialty. He spent a year on a scientific trip to Russia and abroad: in Germany, France and Italy.
For three years he was in charge of the Hydrometric part of Turkestan Territory, having published 32 scientific papers during this time. Then, until 1920, he headed the Hydrometric part of European Russia (he lived in Petrograd).
In the years 1918-1920. headed the Water Energy Bureau of the Electrification Preparation Division of the Northern Region of Russia. In subsequent years, he participated in the design of many hydroelectric power plants and other structures, including the Volga-Don Canal. The organizer (1922) of the Russian Hydrological Institute, for 14 years was its leader.
Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1931). In 1932 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in 1935 - academician of the Agricultural Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
Arrested on December 25 or 26, 1936. At the time of his arrest, he was the director of the State Hydrological Institute, the head of the water cadastre of the USSR.
The visiting session of the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR in Leningrad was sentenced on May 22, 1937 under Art. Art. 58-7-8-11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to capital punishment. Shot on May 23, 1937.
Memory
In 1925, a bay was named in honor of V. G. Glushkov in the northern part of Rusanova Bay on the Kara coast of the northern island of Novaya Zemlya .
