About the Single

Song Information

The composition was recorded during the Self Destruct Tour concert tour at the South Beach Hotel in Miami , where the band stayed; Trent Reznor was also involved in producing the soundtrack using the portable version of the Pro Tools software and hardware complex [1] [2] . Writing a song for a feature film and guiding the creation of a soundtrack for it was for Reznor the first work related to music for films [3] [4] . Trent tried to make the composition thematically close to the film [3] , but the text “Burn” spoke more about despair [4] , thereby continuing the concept of the Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral album [5] . “Burn” has a structure similar in construction to another NIN song “ Closer ”. In addition, the “Burn” rhythm contains some hip-hop elements [3] , and Reznor's vocals and the sound of the guitar were distorted.

The song gained some popularity. NIN performed “Burn” at the Woodstock '94 Music Festival, as well as throughout their concert tours starting with the Fragility Tour . The concert sound of the track changed slightly.

In November 2004, the composition was included in the bonus material of the anniversary reissue of The Downward Spiral album [6] .

In 2008, “Burn” was included in the downloadable package of tracks for the musical computer game Rock Band .

Video clip

Trent Reznor in the Burn video

The music video was shot by Hank Corwin and Trent Reznor. The video shows Reznor performing the song “Burn”, and fragments from the film “ Natural Born Killers ” and various historical shots are projected in the background. The musician Chaba Thot wrote the following about the video in one of his articles:

In the “elliptical” time frame of music video narratives, NIN's work “Burn” creates a kind of commentary on the state of things in society, showing us the shattered dreams of modern progress. Further, the installation establishes a complex visual connection between world historical events and the current state of society, namely the American one [7] .
Original text
In the elliptic time frame of music video narratives, NIN's 'Burn' forms a commentary on the social state of things, positing images of the ruins of modernity's dream of progress. As the montage progress, it establishes complicated visual links between world-historical events and specifically American developments.

In 2005, the video entered the Collected video collection [8] [9] .

Perception

Robert Hilburn, editor of the Los Angeles Times , in his review of the soundtrack, took “Burn” positively [4] . According to him, despite the text, the song was able to convey the anxiety of the film itself [4] .
