Border delimitation ( lat. Delimitatio "markup") - determination of the general position and direction of the state border between neighboring states through negotiations.
Delimitation ordinances are usually part of peace treaties or special agreements establishing or modifying state borders.
In the course of delimitation, the contracting parties make up - as a rule, according to the map, without carrying out work on the ground - a description of the border line, which can be an independent article in the contract itself or in an annex to it.
In accordance with the position of the boundary line defined in the agreement, it is mapped onto a geographical map, which, as a rule, is an integral part of the border delimitation agreement and as such serves as a clear indication of the position of the boundary line.
Delimitation materials serve as the basis for the subsequent stage of defining the boundary - its conduct on the ground ( demarcation ).
The term “delimitation” is often used in International Space Law .
