Biography

From the peasants. Since 1924 he worked as a nurse, then as a pharmacist in the Borisov People’s Hospital.

In 1925-1929 he studied at the Kiev Forestry Institute. Since 1928 it was published in the journal Molodnyak . The first published story was “Lisokradi” (1928).

He was a member of the literary organization of the Young Writers of the Komsomol Writers of Ukraine, and later - the All-Ukrainian Union of Proletarian Writers (VUSPP).

From the late 1920s, A. Shiyan began to intensively enter literature. In periodicals one after another publishes stories. In the years 1930-1932. saw the light of six original collections of essays, short stories, novellas. One of the remarkable early stories is "Imandra" (1930). The author was widely popularized with the novel Balanda (1930), the novels Magistral (1934) and The Thunderstorm, which in 1958 produced the movie The Thunderstorm Over the Fields .

Member of the Great Patriotic War. War correspondent of the newspaper "Soviet Army", and since July 1941 - the front-line newspaper "For Soviet Ukraine", headed by M. Bazhan . In January 1943 he was transferred to the Ukrainian headquarters of the partisan movement , in May he was sent to the enemy rear for several months - to the partisan unit of A. Saburov . Front-line correspondence of A. Shiyan, his journalism, stories were printed in army and national newspapers, sounded on the radio, were published as separate books - “Rozplata” (1941), “I don’t give up!”, “Earth is happy” (1942).

After returning from the enemy’s rear - the head of the partisan department of the newspaper “ Radyanska Ukraine ”, the impressions were set out in the reporting book “The Partisan Territory”.

In the postwar years he wrote novels, short stories, and was fond of drama.

In Kiev, he lived in the house of writers " Rolit ".

He died in 1989. He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery .
