History
These two countries have a long history of mutual relations, and also share the common heritage of the British colonial empire . After the end of the War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, Burma became one of the first states to recognize the independence of Bangladesh. The presence of 270,000 Myanmar Muslim refugees (Arakans) in southern Bangladesh is often an irritant in bilateral relations, which are generally friendly. Between the two countries was a 40-year maritime border dispute over the territory of the Bay of Bengal , which was resolved at the UN Tribunal in March 2012 [2] .
Bangladesh and Myanmar plan to build a high-speed highway that will connect these countries with China, the proposed route will pass through the cities of Chittagong , Mandalay , Kunming . The governments of both countries are also discussing the possibility of exporting Myanmar gas to Bangladesh, as well as the construction of a joint hydropower plant in Rakhine State [3] [4] .
The political class and civil society of Bangladesh have often expressed support for the democratic struggle of the peoples of Myanmar against the military regime. In 2006, a petition was signed from 500 Bangladeshi politicians and intellectuals, including Sheikh Hasin and Kamal Hossein , in which they expressed support for the actions of Aung San Suu Kyi and called for the release of all political prisoners in Myanmar [5] . After winning the 2008 elections , Sheikh Hasina again defended the democratic struggle of the peoples of Myanmar, calling for the end of the imprisonment of Suu Kyi and the Myanmar political prisoners [6] .
