Biography
Nikolay Simonenko was born in 1917 in the village of New Gryakovo (now - Chutovsky district of the Poltava region of Ukraine ). After graduating from the Kharkov Transport College, he worked as a mechanic. In 1937, Simonenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He graduated from the Kharkov Military-Political School. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. He was wounded twice in battles [1] .
By September 1943, Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Simonenko was the combatant deputy commander of the 1st motorized rifle battalion of the 69th mechanized brigade of the 9th mechanized corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On the night of September 21-22, 1943, the battalion of Simonenko crossed the Dnieper and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the Bukrinsky bridgehead . On September 24–25, 1943, Simonenko repeatedly personally raised the battalion’s soldiers in attacks, in which 2 tanks, 2 vehicles, 1 armored personnel carrier, more than 400 enemy soldiers and officers were destroyed, and a height of 216.8 was taken by storm. December 19, 1943 Simonenko was seriously wounded [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944, for “courage and heroism shown in crossing the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead on its right bank,” Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Simonenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for number 3882 [1] .
After the war, with the rank of Major, Simonenko was sacked. He lived and worked in Karlovka . He died on October 11, 1985 [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner , two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
