Flare is an aviation term for the uncontrolled release of flames from exhaust pipes or nozzles of an aircraft engine.

Gas turbine engines torch due to excess fuel in the combustion chamber . During the start-up, the ignition system may not work well, or excess fuel may be supplied (“delayed” start-up), which causes the ejection of a column of flame from the nozzle. In case of a failed start, in order to remove excess fuel from the gas-air duct, it is necessary to perform a “cold scrolling” of the engine, otherwise it is also possible to “flare”, increase the temperature of the gases to the beyond and develop an emergency situation .

When the engine is mothballed, oil products are removed from the engine by scrolling and subsequent starting, slight flaring is allowed in some cases.

Also, with the development of surging , a flare occurs, which manifests itself in the form of periodic flames from the nozzle.

In any case, the flare is an off-design mode of the engine. In addition, it causes a strong psychological effect - on powerful turbojet engines a column of flame can reach several tens of meters.

Flames with shock waves (striped), ejected from the nozzle of the forced turbojet engine, is a standard mode of operation.

In the event of an engine fire, the term “flare” is not used, since fuel from the destroyed utilities in the under hood space is burning , and these are completely different technical processes.
