Nicolas Gatineau, sir Duplessis ( Fr. Nicolas Gatineau Sieur Duplessis ; 1627 - 1689 ) is an industrialist from French Canada, after whom the river and the city are named.

Biography
Received a good education. Initially served as a notary public and trademark attorney for the Compagnie des Cents Associés , then government clerk and notary in Trois-Rivieres , and eventually became a prestigious judge and fur trader in Cap-de-la-Madeleine.
He was married to Marie Crevier, who bore him 6 children:

- Jean-Baptiste (1671-1750)
- Madeline (1672-1747)
- Louis (1674-1750)
In his trading affairs, Gatineau often rafted along the Ottawa River and its tributary, which later received the name "Gatineau" in honor of him and his three sons, who founded a trading post at the mouth of the river.
