Origin

Guy Ibelin was the eldest son of the titular lord Arsuf Balian Ibelin (d. 1333 ) and Margarita Ibelin (d. After 1342) [1] . However, there is an opinion that he was the son of the brother of Balian of Arsuf - Guy Ibelin. One way or another, he came from the Arsuf branch of the Ibelins, being one of its last representatives [2] [3] . Guy Ibelin's younger brother Philip was one of the direct participants in the assassination of King Pierre I de Lusignan [4] [2] .

Biography

Despite the fact that Guy Ibelin was a native of the highest aristocracy of the Kingdom of Cyprus and had the opportunity to make the career of the church hierarch the easiest and most convenient way by acquiring the right of prebend , he chose the most difficult way of monastic service [3] . In 1344, Guy Ibelin joined the Dominican monastic order , probably entering the same Dominican monastery in Nicosia, in which he was subsequently buried. On April 27, 1357, Guy Ibelin was ordained a bishop of the Latin diocese of Limassol [2] [3] .

According to the chronicle of Leontius Mahera , it was the bishop of Limassol, Guy Ibelin, who, after the death of King Hugo IV, re-crowned his son Pierre de Lusignan with the King of Cyprus on November 24, 1359 in the Hagia Sophia in Nicosia [5] [3] .

In 1365, the bishop of Limassol, Guy Ibelin, probably took part in the military campaign of King Pierre I against Egypt, which ended with the capture of Alexandria [6] .

Guy Ibelin died in his home in Nicosia on March 29, 1367 from an unknown illness [7] . Before his death, the bishop bequeathed 20,000 bezants to the construction of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Limassol [8] .

Library

The description of the library of Guy Ibelin, consisting of 52 works of medieval authors, mainly of theological and religious-philosophical content (for example, the treatise " The Sum of Theology " by Thomas Aquinas ), has been preserved . Among other things, it contained collections of sermons and liturgical texts, hagiographic descriptions and works on canon law . An interesting exception was the treatise on veterinary medicine regarding the treatment of horses [9] . Bibliographic analysis showed that the vast majority of Guy Ibelin’s books were created in the 1st half of the 14th century , which allowed Richard to conclude that Guy Ibelin formed the library during his studies and that the library was no longer replenished in his later life [10 ] .
