Biography

The son of the Granada emir Sad al-Mustain (d. 1465 ), who ruled in 1455 - 1462 , 1462 - 1464 , the younger brother of the emir Abul al-Hassan Ali .

During the civil war in the Emirate of Granada, between Abul al-Hassan Ali and his son Boabdil, Muhammad al-Zagall fought on the side of his older brother.

In the summer of 1482, Prince Boabdil, with the support of the powerful Abenseragi clan , rebelled against his father’s power and captured Granada . The ousted emir Abul al-Hassan Ali with his brother and supporters fled to Malaga , and then to Almeria . In April 1483, Emir Boabdil was defeated by the Castilians at the Battle of Lusen and was captured. After the capture of his son , Abul al-Hassan Ali re-occupied the emir’s throne.

In 1485, in Almeria, Muhammad ibn Sad al-Zagall (“The Brave”) ousted his older brother Abul al-Hassan Ali from power and, with the assistance of the vizier Abu Kasim Bannigas, declared himself the new emir of the Granada emirate. The ousted emir was sent into exile in Almunecar , where he soon died.

Castilian troops continued their offensive on the lands of the Granada emirate. The castles of Amaru, Setenil, Cartama, Koyin and Ronda were taken. In 1486, the city of Cambil was occupied. To bring discord into the camp of the enemy, Ferdinand and Isabella freed Emir Boabdil from captivity, supplying him with money and troops. Boabdil took a vassal oath of allegiance to the king and queen of Spain, pledged to pay a large ransom and left noble hostages. Boabdil returned to Granada, where his authority was recognized in Veles-Malaga and Akharkia. At the same time, the Castilians captured Elvira, Moklin, Colomera and several other castles. In April 1487, Muhammad al-Zagall fled from Granada to Guadis , and Boabdil was again proclaimed Emir of Granada. Muhammad al-Zagall kept under his rule the cities: Malaga , Almeria and Guadis . In August 1487, after a three-month siege, the Castilians captured Malaga. Then Aharkia and Veles were taken, and in December 1489, after a long siege, Basa surrendered.

In 1490, the emir Muhammad al-Zagall surrendered to the Castilians the cities of Almeria and Guadis and all the surrounding castles that he owned. Under the rule of his nephew Boabdil, only Granada and its environs remained.

In 1491, Muhammad Az-Zagall went to North Africa, where he was imprisoned on the orders of King Fez Muhammad al-Sheikh , a friend of Boabdil, who ordered him to be blinded.

He allegedly died in Tlemcen in 1494 .
