Early settlements
In the Quaternary, the plain between Florence, Prato and Pistoia was occupied by a large lake that covered the valley to the west of Monte Albano and north of Monte Jovi Mountain. Over time, the lake, located about fifty meters above sea level, dried up, leaving behind numerous ponds and swamps, in particular in the area of Campi Bisenzio , Xinyi and Bagno a Ripoli .
It is believed that between the X and VIII centuries BC. er at the confluence of the rivers Arno and Munyon already existed settlement Villanova. Between VII and VI centuries BC. er The Etruscans discovered and used a convenient ford across the Arno above the confluence where the plain was located between the hills. In this place they built a bridge or a ferry, which was probably located a few dozen meters from the current Ponte Vecchio bridge. The Etruscans, however, chose not to establish settlements in these places — it was too accessible for possible attacks or floods — and settled six kilometers from the ford, on the hill where Fiesole was founded, linking the main Etruscan centers of the Emilia region with north of Lazio .
Romans
Some historians are still arguing about the existence of pre-Roman settlements in the area of today's Florence. However, the history of Florence is traditionally counted from 59 BC. Oe., from the founding of the Romans of the village called Florentia , intended for military veterans. The name is associated with the date of the foundation of the settlement - it was accounted for florals , and therefore dedicated to the goddess of spring . According to another version, the military camp was given the name Fluentia - from the Latin “stream”, since the city was located at the mouth of two rivers, Munyon and Arno. According to some historians, the city was founded for political and strategic reasons: in 62 BC. er Fiesole was a stronghold of supporters of Catiline , and Caesar decided to create his outpost just 6 km from Fiesole, by the Arno River. In 59, the structure of the settlement was already quite defined in its classical structural components - two streets intersected and divided castrum into two parts.
The Romans built a ferry across Arno and Muñone, which allowed them to gain control over the Arno valley and part of the plain leading to the sea in the direction of the city of Pisa . The first official information about the life of the settlement dates back to 123 : this year the first bridge over the Arno was built.
Around the Roman military camp, meanwhile, began the construction of buildings that traditionally characterized Roman cities: the aqueduct (from Monte Morello), the forum (in the area of the current Republic Square), the baths (at least two), the theater and the amphitheater. The surrounding area was adapted not only for agriculture, but also to counter floods. A river port was also built, which allowed trading with the Pisans.
Being already a full-fledged city, Florence, by virtue of its military origin, was dedicated to the god Mars, who became its first patron.
The borders of the Roman city are still recognizable on modern maps of Florence: the cardo and decumanus (that is, the two main streets) are identified today with Via Strozzi, Via del Corso and Via degli Speciali, which cut the center from west to east, and from Via Roma and Kalimala, crossing the city from north to south. The quadrangle, surrounded by walls with numerous towers, an area of about 1,800 meters, accommodated a population of about 10-15 thousand inhabitants.
In 285, during the reorganization of the empire , Diocletian deployed the headquarters of a legion commander in Florence, who was responsible for the entire region of Tuscia. At the same time, merchants from the East brought the cult of Isis to the city.
Early Christian Era
The first preachers probably came to Florence from the East along with Syrian, Greek and Anatolian merchants. Historians of the 14th century, in particular Giovanni Villani, traditionally attribute the Christianization of the city to the acts of the disciples of the Apostle Peter, St. Frontino and St. Peacock. The dating of the Christianization of the region is confirmed by the finds of ancient tombstones in the area of the Church of Santa Felicita.
By the year 313, the first bishop of the city of Felix was mentioned, mentioned as a guest in Rome by Pope Miltiades . In 393, St. Ambrose visited Florence founded the church of San Lorenzo outside the city walls (possibly at the site of the Christian necropolis).
Ten years later, Florence became the center of the archdiocese headed by Saint Zinovia, who organized the resistance of the Florentines to the invasion of the Ostrogoths Radagais . Ostgoths besieged the city, but were defeated by Stilihon , commander of the emperor Honorius ( 405-406 ).
According to scientists, such as Lopez Peña, the city was very deserted at that time: many villas were already divided into more modest houses, and later demolished to make room for church buildings. There is a hypothesis that landowners chose to leave Florence to protect themselves from exorbitant taxation and prevent the imposition of administrative positions that required personal responsibility for tax collection.
During this period there was a final transition of the entire population to Christianity (this was facilitated by the effect of the defeat of the Ostrogoths, prescribed by the prayers of St. Zinovy). The cult of Mars replaced the cult of St. John the Baptist as the patron saint of the city. By this time, also include the construction of a number of churches, in particular the church of San Giovanni.
Middle Ages
Wars between Goths and Byzantines
In the 5th century, Florence, like most of Italy, was in the hands of Theodoric . In 541 , during the war between the Goths and the Byzantines, the city was occupied by the army of Belisarius , and then plundered and burned in 550 by the Goths of Totila .
Perhaps the remnant of this period is the Paliazza Tower, which has an unusual circular layout for that time. After the departure of the ready Byzantines began to rebuild the city and founded, in particular, the church of Saint Apollinaria, now lost.
Langobards
In 570, Florence fell into the hands of the Lombards , who, however, chose Lucca as the main city of Tuscany. They established control over the roads leading to Rome between Altopacio , Lucca and Fucecchio - part of the future Via Francigena Franks Road. Florence, therefore, was far from the trade routes, the city began to decline.
In the period from the end of the 8th century and the beginning of the 9th century, after two centuries of decline, the city experienced a revival, the starting point of which was the resumption of economic activity and population growth, possibly caused by the migration of the rural population to the city, frightened by the periodic raids of barbarians.
Carolingian Period
Charlemagne stayed in Florence at least twice - in 781 , on his return from Rome, and in 786 , when he received complaints from some monks against the Lombard prince Gudibrand. The supposed restoration of Florence in the status of a major city by Charlemagne falls into the category of hypotheses, although it was often supported by chroniclers. In fact, the revival of Florence dates back to Lothar I : in 854, the city committees of Florence and Fiesole were merged, and Florence was chosen as the regional center. The relationship between the two cities during this period is characterized as the relationship between the “mother” (Fiesole) and the “daughter” (Florence), which eventually led to a gradual increase in the importance of Florence and the extinction of Fiesole.
During this period, perhaps out of fear of the invasion of the Hungarians, the walls of the city were fortified and expanded until they reached the bank of the Arno. However, in 825, a detachment of Norman pirates rose along the Arno in oars, reconnoitered all the nearby territory, and attacked Fiesole, managing to burn the palace of the local bishop [1] .
In 978, the Margravine Villa Tuscan founded a Benedictine abbey in Florence. The son of Villa, Hugo I , chose Florence as the residence of the Margrave of Tuscany, than he revenged on Lucca, who had previously been the political capital of the region.
XI century
The foundation of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte in 1013 can be considered a symbol of the true revival of the city, in the presence of Bishop Alibrand and with the consent of Emperor Henry II . The church with light arches, Corinthian capitals and a beautiful white marble facade was the culmination of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany.
In 1055, in Florence, in the presence of Pope Victor II and Emperor Henry III , a council was held, which condemned simony and concubinate on the initiative of John Gualbert .
A few years later the Marquis of Godfroy of Lorraine chose Florence as the capital, and in 1059-1061 the Pope of Rome was the Bishop of Florence Gerard of Burgundy (under the name of Nicholas II ).
XII century
Mathilde Tuscan Board
Cases of John Gualbert struck the first blow to the corrupt clergy, but the problem was not solved yet, and soon groups of ordinary people (traditionally from lower classes, but not only) began to form on the peninsula - the so-called Pataria . Clashes between Pataria and the clergy became the basis for the formation of the camps of Guelphs and Ghibellines - supporters of the papacy and the imperial power, respectively. Matilda Tuscan tried to mediate between the warring parties. In Florence, she settled down with the guard in the castle next to the church of San Lorenzo ), and her presence alone was enough to suppress possible clashes. By the time of her death in 1115, the walls of the city were fortified, the Altaffront castle was built on the river.
After the death of Matilda, and then the long interregnum in connection with the death of Emperor Henry V , who ruled Florence as a margrave, the city was left without sovereignty, which contributed to the development of self-government. The first mentions of the self-government of Florence are contained in the nameless chronicle, which states that in 1125 certain consuls Burellus, Florenzitus, Broccardus and Servolus stood at the head of the city. Also little is known about the organization of management [2] . According to some information, twelve consuls were elected annually, submitting to the Council of 150 Bonomini, which in turn was elected four times a year at a general meeting of the townspeople. The specific functions of these controls are unknown. In practice, obviously, large families dominated the political life of the city.
The study by Enrico Faini (University of Florence), published in 2004 , corrects and complements some of the earlier information [3] . In particular, he cites a list of the most influential Florentine families that actually ruled the city: Adimari, Amidei, Ardigny, Brunelleschi, Buondelmonte, Kaponsacchi, Donati, Fifanti, Gerardi, Nerli, Porchelli, Scolari, Uberti. In more recent times to have joined the Juneau family Rossi / Yakoppi, Sacchetti, Dzhandonati, Cavalcanti Kermontezi, Dzhanfilyatstsi, Pili, Sisi, Soldaneri, Skuarchyasakki, Strozzi, Tedaldini, Tornakinchi, Vecchietti, Della Torre Della Bella, Judy, Gochi, Lamberti, Infangati, Barucci, Cipriani, Avogadi, Visdomini and others.
Economic Growth
At the beginning of the XII century, Florence entered a period of growth in handicraft production and high rates of growth in trade. The river port flourished, the city was connected to the Franks Road Trade. From 1182 the Florentine merchants began to reach the level of European trade. The city bought paintings from Flanders and France and paints from Levant , local artisans painted cloth and resold abroad at high prices.
Gradually, Florence began to subdue the surrounding rural settlements. This was hampered by the castles of large feudal lords. Special resistance was put forward by the Alberti families (in the north and west), the Counts Guidi and Gerardi. In 1125, the Florentines captured and completely destroyed Fiesole, after which the Florentine aristocrats built villas on the site of the city. By the middle of the century, Florence was already dominant in the Valdarno Valley and entered the regional political arena along with other major cities.
In 1171, Pisa , which had difficulty in fighting against Genoa and Emperor Frederick I of Barbarossa , asked for military support from Florence. Assistance was provided in exchange for trade preferences, in particular, concessions in the field of transportation of goods and the use of harbors for the storage of goods. In turn, Lucca and Siena decided to stop the advancement of Florence.
Social upheaval
In 1172 - 1175, new fortress walls were built in Florence, which was caused by the expansion of the city from 24 to 75 hectares. Into the limits of the city entered some nearby villages, in particular, Oltrarno. Due to the growth of wealth and the constant influx of people from rural areas (both ordinary people and wealthy landowners), the population of Florence in this period was about 25,000 people. However, the growth of population and well-being led to the first serious exacerbation of social relations and the complication of political life.
An attempt by the Uberti family in 1177 to undermine the system of alliances between the groups of families that ruled the city ended in a bloody civil war that lasted about three years. Uberti declared themselves supporters of the emperor, and this war was the first episode of the struggle between the nascent groups of Guelphs and Ghibellines.
In 1193, a new riot led by Uberti was supported by the new classes of merchants and artisans " Calimala ", as well as by Emperor Henry VI , as a result the system of consuls was eliminated. Although it was revived in 1197 , it was clear how this system of government was already ineffective.
XIII century
Subtest Mode
In 1207, the city government was transformed, and instead of several consuls they began to elect one podesta , preferably from a nonresident, which allowed it to be impartial and not interested in the struggle between families. The first podesta was Gulfredotto from Milan . The candidate for the podesta was supposed to have knightly dignity, military skills and legal knowledge. In practice, the management of the city was reduced to a narrow oligarchic council.
Military victories
Between 1197 and 1203, Florence strengthened its control over the surrounding lands through active military campaigns, especially in the Valdarno lowlands and in the Valdels valley, important for the control of the Franks Road . In 1202, after several years of siege, the city of Semifonte was taken, which was completely razed to the ground and a ban was imposed on subsequent construction. Capturing Semifonte, Florence dealt a serious blow to the power of the Alberti family, which resisted the expansion of the Florentines.
Population growth
In the XIII century, Florence entered its heyday. Control over the Dear Franks gave her economic independence and allowed her to maintain a powerful army [4] . In the city there was a large flow of people who joined the ranks of craft guilds and merchant unions. In addition, external expansion provided cheap labor - residents of the captured villages, who began to settle separately in the city, forming its new areas.
Arrival of begging orders
In support of the lower strata of the city’s population, monks of beggars orders arrived, which were distributed radially along the walls: Franciscans to the “Meadow of All Saints” (il Prato di Ognissanti) and on the site of the future Basilica of Santa Croce , Dominicans in the north-west (where in 1219, the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella will be built), the silvestretsi - in Cafaggio (on the site of the future church of San Marco ), the servites - not far from the site of the future construction of the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin, ) the Carmelites - at the Church Santa Maria del Carmine Augustin S - on the site of the future Basilica of the Holy Spirit . Thus was born a new urban layout, characterized by the location of houses around the churches and the squares arranged in front of them.
Fighting Heresy
Together with mendicant orders, heresy began to spread in the city. Among the heretics, the Cathars , who sympathized with some Ghibellines, for example, the Uberti clan, especially took root. Dominicans and Franciscans actively participated in the pursuit of heretics [5] .
Guelphs and Ghibelines
The beginning of the quarrel between Guelphs and Ghibellines traditionally dates back to the discord between the Amidea and Buondelmonte families in 1216 , but the first real clashes occurred when Frederick II decided to send his son Friedrich of Antioch to support the Ghibelline party. In response, the Guelphs began to form armed units.
The government responded with measures to rally the Ghibellines and Popolo (the new middle class) around the podtest. Frederick of Antioch in 1248 decided to crush the attempt to revolt the Guelphs by firm measures: according to his father’s plans, he had to subordinate the city to imperial control. After the initial resistance, the Guelphs were expelled, leaving the city in the hands of the Ghibellines, in particular the Uberti family. Meanwhile, many Guelphs were sent to the countryside, while maintaining capital, prestige and contacts with the papal curia.
"People's Government"
On September 21, 1250, the Florentine army was defeated, ambushed by Guelphs in Figline-Valdarno. A month later, there was an uprising led by “Popolo”, expelling Frederick of Antioch and all the large families that supported him. Thus began the period of prosperity of the “Old People” - Popolo Vecchio . A double system of governance has been formed in the city: on the one hand, a podest with two consuls; on the other, a captain (an alien like a subtest) with two consuls.
The decade of the “People's Government” was accompanied by the flourishing of economic activity, in particular, the financial system based on the gold currency introduced in 1252 - florin, the first gold coin in Western Europe, which was actively distributed throughout the Mediterranean.
Battle of Montaperti
Manfred Sicilian 's coming to the fore after the defeat of Ezzelino III and Romano ( 1259 ) as leader of the Ghibellines helped the Florentine ghibelins unite at a crucial moment and on 4 September 1260 smash the Guelphs in the battle of Montaperti. After that, the Ghibellines organized repression, consisting in exile, the confiscation of property and the destruction of houses of Guelphs.
Urban IV Intervention
In 1263, Pope Urban IV decided to support Carl of Anjou in his struggle with Manfred and excommunicated the Ghibellines of Florence and Siena. This caused a great resonance among the population, in both cities the dispensation of religious ceremonies ceased and the discontent with the power of the Ghibellines began to mature.
Battle of Benevento
It took the news that Manfred was defeated at the Battle of Benevento (February 1266 ), in order to start a riot against the Ghibellines, who were finally expelled from the city. " Popolo " established a government with a predominance of Guelphs, who in 1267 proclaimed a podest of the King of Sicily, Charles of Anjou.
80s
In 1280, through the efforts of Cardinal Latino Orsini, many of the Ghibelines were able to return to their homeland. Soon, fate again smiled on them - the new emperor Rudolf Habsburg came to power, the power of the Ghibellines, led by Guido da Montefeltro , strengthened in Romagna, and Sicilian Vespers expelled Charles of Anjou. The guilds began to grow in the city, while political struggle between large families continued.
Foreign Policy
Renaissance
XIX — XX centuries
