He began working as a journalist in 1911 at the Ottawa Journal, and later became an editor of the newspaper. He has been a member of the press in parliament for over 20 years. At different times - the correspondent of The Times in Ottawa.

As an international journalist, he participated in a number of conferences in London , Washington and Canberra , in 1945 he covered the events at the Potsdam Conference .

Member of the Conservative Party of Canada. In 1962, O'Leary was elected to the Senate of Canada .

He served as rector of Queens University in Kingston , Ontario in 1968, but was forced to resign under pressure from students.
