Biography
Ole Jacob Brock was born January 14, 1818 in Fredrikstad in the family of Johann Jörgen Broch ( Norwegian Johan Jørgen Broch ; 1791-1860), an officer who was highly respected in his own country as a political writer and member of the Storting [4] .
He studied in Christiania (now Oslo ), lived for a long time in Paris and then traveled to Belgium , Germany , Switzerland and Upper Italy [4] .
In the autumn of 1842, he founded the Latin and Real Schools in Oslo, together with Nissen, in 1843-52 he was a teacher in a military school and from 1853 in a higher military school [4] .
In December 1848, he took the place of a lecturer in pure mathematics at Christianian University and since 1858 was a professor there [4] .
In addition, in 1852 he became a member of the board of directors of a mortgage bank, in December 1855 assumed the main management of the Norwegian railways, and in 1859 was appointed head of the Norwegian Credit Bank shortly before that [4] .
In the Storting , where in 1862-1869. Brock was a representative of the Norwegian capital, he participated in the discussion of critical issues and actively supported the proposal for the construction of railways [4] .
In 1869, he was invited to the cabinet of ministers and took over the management of the maritime and postal departments, but in 1872 he retired and returned to his university studies [4] .
In 1879-1889 he headed the International Bureau of Weights and Measures . In recent years, Brock has often been the official delegate of Norway at international exhibitions and congresses [4] .
In addition to many articles published in periodicals and journals of scientific societies on mathematics, mechanics, and optics [4] .
Ole Jacob Brock died on February 5, 1889 in the commune of Sevres near Paris.
