Beyuk-Shor [1] [4] ( azerb. Böyük-Şor ) is one of the largest lakes in Azerbaijan [5] . It is located on the Absheron peninsula , in the Binagadi , Sabuchinsky and Narimanov districts of Baku [6] .

History
The origin is relict . Area - 16.2 km², volume - 27.5 million m³ [2] . Altitude - 12.6 [1] meters. Salt water [1] . The maximum width of the lake is 2 km, the maximum depth is 2 m, the average depth is 1.3 m, the length of the coastline is 12 km [3] .
In 1866, the first tank in Azerbaijan for storage and production of oil was built near the lake [7] . In 1929, oil and industrial water flowed into the lake along the Keshlya Canal. Since the 1970s, household and industrial waters were thrown into the lake [6] . According to international experts, Boyuk Shor Lake is considered one of the most difficult polluted lakes in the world [8] .
Ecology
In 2014, in connection with the construction of the Olympic Stadium near the lake, the lake began to be cleaned [8] , as part of a project to restore and improve the ecological condition of the lakes of the Absheron Peninsula [9] . The ecological restoration project of the lake consists of two stages. The first phase was carried out in 2014-2015, which included the restoration of territories with an area of almost 300 hectares, separation and isolation through a dam in the northern part of the area contaminated with oil. The dam divides the lake into two parts. On February 28, 2014, President Ilham Aliyev reviewed the ongoing work on the comprehensive environmental restoration of Lake Boyuk-Shor and the surrounding territories [10] [11] [12] .
The second stage of restoration and improvement of the state of the lake began in 2015 and will continue until 2020. In December 2018, a new Balakhani-Binagadi road was opened, which passes through a dam in Lake Boyuk-Shor with a length of 1570 meters [13] [14] .
