Biography

He was born on February 14 ( February 26 in a new style) in 1878 in Polotsk, Vitebsk province, into a poor Jewish family. Father was a tailor, mother was in the Molokan sect [2] . At 16, he left home, lived for some time in Tula and Orel , then in Odessa .

In 1896-1899 he studied with K. K. Kostandi at the Odessa Art School, where he graduated with a medal, which gave him the right to enter the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAH) without exams. Since 1899, he studied at the Higher School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at the IAH with I. I. Tvorozhnikov and V. E. Savinsky , then - in the workshop of I. E. Repin . In 1907, for the painting “Inspirational Minute” he was released from the Academy with the title of artist and the right to retire abroad, thus having visited Holland and France in 1908.

In 1911, Sorin's work was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Turin , Italy . In 1913, 1915 and 1917 he took part in the exhibitions of the World of Art in St. Petersburg , and at the end of 1917 in the exhibition of the New Society of Artists in Petrograd . Also exhibited at TPHV exhibitions.

After the October Revolution, the artist lived for some time in Yalta , where in 1918 he was an exhibitor of the exhibition "Art in the Crimea." In 1919 he moved to Tiflis , where he met with S. Yu. Sudeikin , V.V. Kamensky , N.N. Evreinov . He took part in the exhibition "Small Circle". On May 8, 1920, he and the Sudeikins left Batum for Marseille on the steamer Souirah, and on May 20 they arrived in Paris. Having settled in this city, he quickly gained fame in European art circles. In 1922-1923, Sorin exhibited his work in the Autumn Salon, in 1926-1930 - in the Tuileries Salon. He continued to participate in exhibitions of Russian art, including in 1921 at the Densi Gallery, and in 1927, at the last exhibition of the World of Art at the Bernheim Gallery. In 1920-1930 he held a number of personal exhibitions in galleries in Paris and London . He often visited the USA, lived for a long time in New York , his solo exhibitions were held at the Brooklyn Museum (1923), Wildenstein Gallery in New York (1927, 1934), Washington (1924), Pittsburgh (1924-1925), Chicago (1927). In 1932 he took part in the exhibition of contemporary Russian art in Philadelphia .

During the Second World War, settled in the United States . He made several large cash contributions to the USSR Assistance Fund [2] . In the postwar years, he occasionally came to Paris.

He died on November 22, 1953 in New York.

Works

In 1902, when he was a student, he painted in Arzamas one of the first portraits of Maxim Gorky . He quickly gained a reputation as an excellent portrait painter and in 1900-1910 Sorin executed portraits of F. I. Chaliapin , A. A. Akhmatova , S. A. Lurie , T. P. Karsavina , Prince S. M. Volkonsky , Princess O. K Orlova, Baroness Yu. T. Steingel and many others. The artist’s works were often reproduced in the magazines “The Sun of Russia”, “Capital and Manor”, ​​“Apollon”.

In Crimea in 1917 he painted a portrait of Princess Olga Orlova. [3]

In exile in France, he performed many portraits of celebrities, in particular, Lilian Guiche , Eleanor Duse , George Balanchine , Serge Polyakov , Nadezhda Teffi , Lev Shestov and Anna Pavlova .

Sorin's works are in the collections of the largest museums in the world, including the Luxembourg Museum in Paris, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the State Tretyakov Gallery and others, as well as in private collections. His works are available in Ukraine - Donetsk and Odessa [4] .

Sorin was known in Europe and America, but he dreamed of fame in Russia and before his death he bequeathed to send 30 portraits of figures of Russian art, executed by him in 1920-1940. His will was fulfilled by the widow - Anna Semenovna Sorina - after the fall of the Iron Curtain . By order of the All-Union Ministry of Culture, Sorin’s gift was transferred to the funds of the Tretyakov Gallery [4] .

Interesting Facts

  • The artist’s wife, an honorary citizen of France, a veteran of the US Army’s medical service, visited Moscow in 1973 and donated twenty of his paintings to art museums of the USSR , including portraits of film actress N. I. Kovanko (1923), M. M. Fokina (1926 ), composer A.S. Lurie (1943), F.I. Chaliapin (1943), A.N. Benois (1946), S. Yu. Sudeikin , J. Balanchine , L.F. Myasin and others. In 1974, she also presented the Georgian Art Museum in Tbilisi with portraits of noble Georgians (Episo Dadiani and Melita Cholokashvili and others) [2] .
  • The portrait of Anna Pavlova by Sorin attracted the attention of German Reichsmarschall German Goering , who took him from Paris to Germany. After the war, the portrait was returned to France [5] [6] .
