Biography

Little is known about Krinan. Its origin is unknown. There is a hypothesis that he came from the clan of kings of the Irish royal dynasty Kenel Conill , who ruled in Tyrconnel [1] . Crinan was the hereditary abbot of the Diocese of Dunkeld and the Stuart of the Western Isles. He also owned lands in the Atoll , of which he was a Mormair [2] [3] .

Krinan was born around 975. Around the year 1000, he married Betok , the eldest daughter of King Alba Malcolm II . Since Malcolm did not have sons, he decided to transfer his kingdom to the eldest son Betok and Crinan - Duncan , who in 1018, under the pressure of Malcolm, was recognized as the king of Strathclyde . After the death of Malcolm in 1034, Duncan became king of Alba, but his rights to the throne were not indisputable. Mormor Morey Maelbeth (Macbeth) , son of Donada, the second daughter of Malcolm II, claimed the throne. As a result of the civil strife, Duncan was killed in 1040, and Maelbeth became king. Duncan's wife with two children fled to Northumbria . Crinan attempted to overthrow Maelbeth in 1045, but died in the “battle between the twelve Scottish heroes” [2] [3] [4] .
