History
Formed in June 1942. The corps included the corps administration (formed by the Moscow Automobile Armored Center) [1] the 110th, 180th, 181st tank brigades and the 18th motorized rifle brigade and other units. Parts of the corps were hastily formed, tank brigades did not have anti-aircraft guns and radio stations, and the motorized rifle brigade was simply not operational: it lacked only 628 junior command personnel, and there were no ammunition and drivers for vehicles at all. The headquarters of the corps was not fully staffed, many officers did not correspond to their posts.
Battle Path
In the last days of June, parts of the corps began to urgently be transferred to the Voronezh region, where they arrived on July 2-4, 1942. On July 4, 1942, the corps was included in the Bryansk Front [2] .
The corps immediately after unloading was introduced into battle in separate units, operating on the front of 78 km. The 18th motorized rifle brigade defended north of Voronezh ; The 180th tank brigade deployed at the turn of the village of Olen Kolodez ; 110th Tank Brigade - south of Voronezh ; The 181st Tank Brigade was to destroy the enemy, wedged south-west of Voronezh . The corps brigades clashed with the enemy even before the arrival in Voronezh of the corps commander, Major General I. D. Chernyakhovsky , who had previously commanded the 241st Infantry Division on the North-Western Front. Colonel S.K. Romanov was appointed commissioner of the corps [3] .
On July 7, 1942, the Bryansk Front was divided into the Bryansk and Voronezh Fronts ; the corps was included in the Voronezh Front [4] .
In the period from August 1 to 20, 1942, the corps under the command of Major General I.P. Korchagin continued to conduct military operations as part of the main group of the 60th Army, fulfilling the previously assigned general task of encircling and destroying the Voronezh group of the enemy. One of the goals of the offensive of the 18th TC was achieved. Lieutenant General K. S. Moskalenko later recalled:
“These were small-scale private offensive operations. They had little success. However, the overall operational result was very positive: the enemy was forced to completely maintain his group in the Voronezh region and to the north-west of it, lost the opportunity to transfer troops from here to Stalingrad and the Caucasus. ”
On October 1, 1942, the corps (except for the 180th infantry regiment, which remains part of the Voronezh Front, the 170th infantry regiment is included in the corps instead) is withdrawn from the Voronezh Front to the Reserve of the Supreme Command Headquarters in the Tatishchevo District [5] .
From December 15 to December 31, 1942 he took part in the Battle of Stalingrad during the operation "Small Saturn" .
As part of the 5th Guards Tank Army, the corps took part in the Prokhorov battle .
For military merits, the corps was awarded the honorary titles Znamensky and Budapest, and was awarded the orders of the Red Banner, Suvorov and Kutuzov.
Conversion
In November 1945, the 18th Panzer Corps was transformed into the 18th Panzer Znamensk-Budapest Red Banner Order of the Suvorov and Kutuzov Division [6] . The 18th TD was disbanded in 1947 [7] .
