Feldkirch [1] [2] ( German: Feldkirch , Alem. Fealdkirch, Vêalkl ) is an old Austrian city in the west of the country, in the federal state of Vorarlberg . Located on the river Ill , a tributary of the Rhine . The westernmost city of Austria, is located only three kilometers from the border with Liechtenstein .

The population is 28 607 people according to the 2001 census , about 31 000 according to 2006 data . Feldkirch - the second largest city of Vorarlberg after Dornbirn , surpassing the provincial capital Bregenz in terms of population.

Geography and transport
The city is located 35 kilometers south of Bregenz, 660 kilometers west of the country's capital - Vienna . The height of the city is 458 meters above sea level.
Administratively, the city is divided into 7 districts.
Railways and highways lead from the city to the north, to Bregenz, and also east to the side of the Arlberg pass, connecting Vorarlberg with Tyrol and the rest of Austria and west to Liechtenstein. The train takes about 5.5 hours to reach Vienna, and about 30 minutes to Bregenz. City transport is represented by buses.

History
Feldkirch was first mentioned in 830 under the name Veldkirichum. Since 1190, the city belonged to the Counts of Montfort, in 1218 received the rights of the city. In 1375 it became part of the Habsburg monarchy.
In 1697, the city was badly damaged by a terrible fire, but a large number of old houses survived to our time.
Attractions
- Schattenburg Castle . The castle was built on a mountain towering over the city in 1260 . He served as the residence of the Counts of Montfort. The largest and best preserved of the ancient castles of Vorarlberg . Nowadays - a museum of local lore.
- St. Nicholas . Rebuilt from an older church in 1478 in the Gothic style. Altar of St. Anne ( 1521 ) was created by a native of the city, Wolf Huber, a famous medieval painter and sculptor.
- Town Hall Finished in 1493 . The facade is decorated with frescoes.
- Katcenturm Tower . The Cat Tower is one of the four surviving towers of medieval city fortifications and the most famous. Built in 1507 .
Culture
Since 2003, the Austrian Prize in the field of poetry, the Feldkirch Prize, has been awarded annually in the Feldkirch .
Education
In the Middle Ages, the city gained fame as a major educational center. In 1649, a Jesuit college, known as Stella Matutina (Morning Star), was founded in the city. The college, now called the Real Bundesgymnasium of the Feldkirch, still exists. In 1875 - 1876 A. Conan Doyle studied at it.
In addition to the Bundes gymnasium, there are 7 more large training centers in the Feldkirch.
Sport
One of the strongest Austrian hockey teams is based in the city - HC Feldkirch .

The mayor of the commune is Wilfried Berchtold ( ANP ) following the 2005 election results.
The council of representatives of the commune ( German: Gemeinderat ) consists of 36 seats.
