The cave was discovered on April 24, 2006, during a planned survey during the development of a quarry owned by Nesher Israel Cement Enterprises Ltd. cement plant. [3] , and received its name from the valley of the Ayalon River, in which it is located (the name itself is first mentioned in the Old Testament , in the Book of Joshua - Josh. 10:12 ) [4] . Her study involved employees of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and volunteers at the Israeli Cave Research Center.
To protect the unique cave fauna (6 endemic arthropod species), the cave is closed to the public. The owner of the career stated that his company is interested in preserving the cave and its ecosystem regardless of all inconveniences [5] .
Discovery and location
Ayalon Cave is located approximately 4 km south-east of the city of Ramla and 21 km from the Mediterranean Sea in the central region of Israel (coordinates 31 ° 54 ′ 37 ″ north, 34 ° 55 ′ 39 ″ east longitude) [6] [7 ] . The cave is located in the limestone quarry of the company Nesher Israel Cement Enterprises Ltd., which covers an area of about 1300 × 600 m [3] . At the time of its discovery in 2006, the pit bottom was lower than the original surface level at 100 m and below the groundwater level as of the 1950s [8] .
Despite its small size, Israel is rich in caves, most of which are karst type [9] . One of the properties of karst is the probability of soil collapse over underground cavities both in quarries and in settlements in insufficiently studied territories [10] . Such collapses have already occurred on the territory of the Ayalon salt anomaly, sometimes in close proximity to residential buildings [10] . In particular, in December 1997, in the career of Nesher Israel Cement Enterprises Ltd. a major accident occurred: the ceiling of one of the underground cavities became so thin that it collapsed under the weight of a bulldozer , whose driver died as a result of a fall from a height of 40 m [3] . Since then, the mining company has begun to actively search for underground cavities in the early stages of the development of new layers of the quarry [3] . The caves were found on the northern and eastern edges of the quarry in the immediate vicinity of the Ayalon cave, but by the time of their discovery they did not have their previous volume and were already partially destroyed [11] .
The cavity, hereinafter called Ayalon, was discovered during a routine examination [3] . She studied the staff of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the volunteers of the Israeli Cave Research Center, which increased the studied length of the cave [6] [12] . On May 31, 2006, zoologists Amos Frumkin and Hanan Diementman described the discovery of Ayalon Cave and its unique fauna at a press conference at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem [13] [14] . This was followed by extensive coverage in Israeli television programs and major newspapers, such as Ha'aretz , Ma'ariv , Yediot Ahronot , and The Jerusalem Post [14] . The opening of the cave was also reported by international media, but in subsequent years it only occasionally became a subject of coverage in Israel.
Geology
Cave structure
Ayalon Cave is located at an altitude of 11.30 to 49 m above sea level and covers an area of 100 × 140 m. It is a system of narrow, partially vertical, corridors with a total length of 2,780 m [15] , forming two main floors. Narrow passages, intersecting with each other like a maze and having round or elliptical sections with a diameter of from 0.30 to 1.4 m, form the upper floor of the cave, located at an altitude of 40 to 49 m above sea level. The total length of the passages on the upper floor, partially destroyed or filled with clay , reaches almost 2000 m, which is about three-quarters of the total length of the cave [16] . Part of the walls is covered with calcite , which in some places completely or over most of the section overlaps the pipe-like passages [17] . The lower floor of the cave is located at a height of 11.30 to 32 m above sea level and is connected to the upper floor by vertical wells. Because of the landslides, more frequent than the upper floor, some areas have become impassable [18] . The passages on the lower floor are wider than the upper one [2] .
On the lower floor of the cave there are three grottoes [2] . The largest grotto is located about 200 m from the cave entrance, its height is more than 30 m, diameter - 40 m [18] . The walls of the grotto are covered with calcite crystals, which form in the lower part of a 5-centimeter thick layer, thinning towards the top [18] . Above this hall is a bedrock layer about 30 m thick [19] . And although the hall itself has not yet collapsed, calculations show its low stability [20] . This conclusion is confirmed by the fact that since the formation of the cave, some of the ceilings in the chambers collapsed, and some passages were blocked by detrital material or have deformed-displaced walls and the ceiling [20] [21] . A part of the grotto is occupied by an underground lake 4 m deep, in which the salinity of groundwater is combined with a high content of hydrogen sulfide [22] [23] .
Hydrogeology
The cave is part of the Yarkon-Taninim aquifer, the main freshwater reservoir in Israel [24] . It feeds on precipitation in the mountainous regions of the West Bank. Jordan and runs along the eastern edge of the Israeli coastal plain from Mount Carmel in the north to Bear-Sheva in the south. The aquifer received its name from its two sources of supply - the Yarkon River, which feeds from freshwater springs, and the Taninim , which carries salt water [25] . Although it has been used and studied for almost a century, its exact structure remains unknown [26] . It is reliably known that it consists of two layers of 350 m each, isolated from each other, but they are often considered together as one aquifer with a thickness of 700 to 1000 m [27] .
Due to intensive water intake, the aquifer is under threat of depletion [21] [28] . The water intake by Israel exceeds the capacity of its natural replenishment, therefore, since 1950, the groundwater level constantly decreases, which in turn leads to an increase in their salinity [25] [29] . Another threat to the aquifer is the inflow of nitrates from untreated sewage both in Israel and in the West Bank. Jordan [30] .
The open-pit mine with Ayalon Cave is located in the center of the Ayalon salt anomaly , a groundwater distribution zone with a high salinity level of 200 km² [26] . Gray and saline groundwater was found in the region in 1932, and later numerous wells drilled into the groundwater zone showed water with an unusually high salinity level [31] . Possible causes of the occurrence of salt anomalies are geologists called leaching of mineral salts from rocks, as well as the intake of fertilizers from the surface [32] [33] . Analysis of water temperature, mineral content and hydrogen sulfide concentration in the water drilled in the Nesher open-pit area and its environs showed that the Ayalon salt anomaly actually feeds from thermal springs [34] . A few weeks before the discovery of the cave, a final article was published on the results of a study of water sources, where researchers admitted the presence of large underground cavities in this area that could be dangerous in the construction and development of quarries [34] .
At the bottom of the lake in the cave were found carrovy scallops , the origin of which is associated with the flows of water flowing from the lake [21] . According to the analysis, in the deep layers of the lake the water temperature ranges from 28.5 to 30 ° C, the hydrogen sulfide content is 4.5 ‰, the pH is 6.8, the salinity is from 490 to 1300 milligrams per liter of chloride [35] . Below a depth of 1 m, the water in the lake is oxygen-free [22] [35] . A layer of sulphurous thermal water is superimposed on warm surface water with a temperature of about 25 ° C, its properties correspond exactly to the surrounding groundwater, and it is in it that crustaceans from the cave fauna inhabit [36] .
Ayalon Cave Formation
Ayalon Cave is a karst cavity in the Upper Cretaceous rock [15] . It was formed several million years ago as a result of the admission to the area of salted and sulphurous thermal water, which mixed with local groundwater, which in turn had already created a system of cracks in the rock [37] . Ayalon Cave is similar in formation mechanism to Frasassi Cave in Italy and Movile Cave in Romania. Such caves are formed when hydrogen sulfide released from thermal water interacts with dissolved oxygen in the environment, or microbes oxidize it to a state of sulfuric acid [38] [39] . The sulfuric acid thus formed reacts with the surrounding limestone and decomposes it into gypsum and carbonic acid :

A similar chemical reaction with a different degree of efficiency can also occur as a result of the vital activity (metabolism) of bacteria , but with other initial chemical elements [40] . Sulfur, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen are used in these reactions, and some of these reactions form aggressively acting and dissolving limestone acids as their final result [40] .
A few decades ago, the lower level of the cave was flooded [41] . The chemical composition of the water, the nature of the cave walls and the samples of microfauna found indicate the ongoing development of the cave at present [41] .
Speleobiology
Environmental Conditions
Before its discovery, Ayalon Cave was completely isolated from the outside world for millions of years [42] (the limestone layer of rock tens of meters thick did not allow for penetration into it from the surface of water and organic materials), and under these conditions it formed its own unique ecosystem [43] . The air temperature in most areas of the cave ranges from 26 to 28 ° C with a humidity of more than 94% [15] . On the lower floor of the cave, the atmosphere is characterized by a high content of hydrogen sulfide [44] .
The organisms living in the cave are constantly dependent on the heat released by the biomass of chemoautotrophic bacteria [45] . Bacteria (such as, for example, the genus Beggiatoa ) derive energy from the hydrogen sulfide present in water, and also use carbon dioxide dissolved in water to form biomass [46] [47] . For aerobic organisms, hydrogen sulfide and sulfides are toxic, they cause oxygen binding and hypoxia [48] . Thus, higher organisms must have adaptations for living in a medium rich in sulfur compounds [49] [50] . Such devices include, for example, the use of oxygen-binding proteins for the transport and storage of oxygen in the body or endo- symbiosis with bacteria oxidizing sulfur [46] [49] [51] .
Such ecosystems on a global scale are very rare, in Israel, a similar ecosystem was first described in 1968 in the source En Nur near the village of Tabga on Lake Kinneret , but a detailed study was not conducted [52] [53] . In 1909, only Typhlocaris Galilea cancer lived in this source together with Tethysbaena relicta It later turned out that they had close relatives in Ayalon Cave [52] [54] . And only further research in the Phrazassi and Moville caves in the 1990s led to the realization that underground ecosystems can exist on the basis of chemoautotrophic bacteria [52] [55] .
Biodiversity
As a rule, caves are poor in species of living beings compared to the surface of the earth [56] . Caves with a high level of biodiversity are located in karst areas, penetrate into the groundwater zone (the phreatic zone ), have a large amount of organic matter (for example, chemoautotrophic origin ) and a greater length [56] . Ayalon Cave combines all these factors. Most chemoautotrophic colonies form the basis for the existence of complex communities of living organisms and a wide variety of invertebrates [57] [58] . Ayalon cave attaches particular importance to the fact that aquatic and terrestrial species of living creatures coexisted in its completely isolated from the external world and the entire chemosynthesis-based ecosystem [59] .
Shortly after its discovery, the cave was studied by members of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem [60] . They found in the salt water of a cave lake various bacteria, protozoa, and 4 species of crustaceans [61] . Some of the lake crustaceans turned out to be marine, and some - of freshwater origin [60] . In the dry part of the lower floor of the cave, but in the immediate vicinity of the underground lake, 4 species of terrestrial invertebrates were discovered. Among them, according to various sources, from 20 to 32 dead samples of the blind scorpion Akrav israchanani and the false corypion Ayyalonia dimentmani [62] [63] were found .
To determine the size of the underground ecosystem outside Ayalon Cave, special studies were conducted in wells made to lower groundwater in the quarry, old wells of the water department, abandoned wells and ponds within a radius of several hundred meters from the cave [64] .

Troglofilny Scorpions are usually found only in the tropics [72] . Therefore, the discovery of underground scorpions outside the tropics in Israel surprised scientists [73] . According to one hypothesis, scorpions, along with cave crustaceans, are remnants of the relict fauna of the times of the Tethys tropical ocean [73] . According to another hypothesis, they are part of an independent underground ecosystem that has developed independently of terrestrial life [74] . Finally, according to the third hypothesis, it is assumed that scorpions did not develop together with underground crustaceans, and settled the cave much later [74] .
Scientific Research
