Early years
Civil War
Logan took part in the first battle of Bull Run as a volunteer. After the battle, he returned to Washington, quit Congress, and joined the army with the rank of colonel. He led the 31st Illinois Volunteer Regiment, which he personally organized. In the army, he earned the nickname “Black Jack” for his black eyes and black hair. He is considered one of the most capable of those officers who did not have a military education. He served in the west in the Grant Army, participated in the battle of Belmonte, where a horse was killed under him, and at Fort Donelson , where he was wounded. After the last battle, he received the rank of brigadier general, dated March 21, 1862. During the siege of Corinth, Logan commanded the brigade, then the division of the Tennessee Army . In the spring of 1863 he was awarded the title of Major General, granted on November 29, 1862.
Post-war activities
Monuments in Washington and Chicago were erected in his honor, and counties in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and North Dakota were named. His name also bears the plaza in Chicago. Logan is one of three people mentioned by name in the Illinois song. After death, his body was laid in the capitol rotunda . He was the father of a U.S. Army officer and cavalier of the Medal of Honor John Alexander Logan Jr. (1865-1899).
